Hi all,



I'm trying to get an understanding of what kind of labor I'm looking at with the installation of a Quaife LSD before I go to a shop to get quotes...I know nothing about the process involved (which is why the shop will be taking care of this one) so I'd like to get a baseline idea of what's involved before I go down this road.



Also, are there any other items I should address while I'm getting an LSD installed just "cause I'm in there already"? Nothing crazy like cryo-treating my gears but just tranny-related preventative maintenance items that won't empty my wallet?

Most shops will remove the transaxle to do the job. I would venture the shop time is usually 3-5 hours for doing the diff and 2-4 hours for the tranny removal & reinstall. Plus parts - the bolts for the ring gear are not cheap. YMMV.

It's a good idea to change the carrier bearings while there. You should also have the rolling resistance of the pinion bearing checked. It's 12 nm I believe.

Looks like I'll be paying nearly the cost of the differential itself in labor to have it installed! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> Ah well, doing the LSD is something I've wanted for a long time so I'm pretty sure I'll have no regrets once it's all said and done.



It's times like these you wish you had a best friend who was an expert Porsche mechanic and loved to be paid in beer... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />



Since I'll probably have to wait until at least early April to install the LSD, I have some time to think about other things to take care of while the tranny is out and apart. The carrier bearings and pinion bearing resistance are great ones I completely didn't even think to check. Anything else? I was also under the impression that the ring gear parts could be reused from my current diff? That's at least what I was told...correct me if I'm wrong.

You should check on dorkiphus.net if you want to pay someone in beer or learn to DIY. If you have not been on the board before it is a DC area board with a lot of DIYers and track rats.

The GT Torque biasing went up $100 Jan 1, 2008 to $1595

Wow, that sounds pretty damn convenient...please do post a price/location when you can!



FYI, I got the diff on ebay for $1050 shipped...not sure if it's the GT or not (doubtful)...



P/N is 40.309.160, list price is $1,395.00.



I'm actually contemplating selling mine, as I'm not sure spending a grand on a part that I can't use for another few months (at least) is the wisest way to invest my money right now. Just posted it in the classifieds for what I bought it for to gauge interest....depending on pricing of an install from RS Barn, maybe I'll be keeping it after all <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/cool.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
