I've put this 20 kg iron mass out of my car 2 years ago and that's ok, lots of people are doing that. Someones, "the balance perfectionists" are putting the battery inplace.
A particular day, I've lost some 2 kg of tasty candy and me and my wife were punishing our brains for some weeks, not able to remember where we had the candy left and we are to young to have Alzheimer disease already.
A month later I've found the candy in the place where I took out the iron mass. Whithout the iron mass, the carpet has bent down from the wheight of the candy. The candy fellt in and then the carpet flipps back to normal, you can't see anything normal, it's like a magican trick.
Of course the candy was nice Belgian chocolat and after 1 hot summer month it wasn't eatable anymore.

A fabulous question. 20kg seriously? Anyone have any negative effects of removing? Is the removal simple or do we need DIY pics etc?
Think I'll stick my amp and sub in there.

porsche, when they used the same sort of device in the 911, called it a ballast weight
bottom line, it is there to make the car "feel" better - it does this by slowing the frequency of oscillation of the chassis - ASC installed it (not porsche) - there was no intense testing or anything like that - it was an afterthought that some of the execs felt made the car more civilized
removal is simple - loosen (but do not remove) the nut on each end - brace yourself and lift out (watch out for the shock to your back)
mine has been out now for 5 years - no negative effects - the good nes and bad news are as follows:
good new: car is lighter, therefore faster - car handles more nimbly - the frequency of oscillation is changed, relieving strain on the chassis
bad news: the now lighter rear suspension load can make the car a bit twichier in the rear, particularly if you do not have LSD - the now altered frequency of oscillation, while decreasing wear on the chassis, might increase wear on the latches (no evidence of this yet though)

Mine went out 3 years ago. The only diff is less weight to drag around.
No negatives. Yank it out. While you are at it swap the spare tire and jack for more weight loss with a can of "fix a flat". If it's good enough for new 911's...

I finally got around to taking it out. Back in the old days I used to throw bags of gravel or sand in my trunk or in the bed of my truck during the winter. Got better traction and it was handy if I got stuck in the snow. Every spring when I pulled that stuff out the car was always faster and lighter on its feet.
Same feeling pulling that thing out. Very odd that someone would thing 40 extra pounds in a sports car is a good idea.

Mine was taken out nearly 5 years ago. The extra storage space is quite handy! I keep some oil, tranny fluid, PS fluid, rags, and miscellaneous other stuff there. That also helps prevent the carpet from falling in, so I've never lost any chocolate. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Got around to removing that thing... You ain't kiddin'!!! that was a heavy bit of nuthin! Thank goodness they put those bits of strap on the ends to get a grip... Removed the spare tire and its accoutrement while I was in there. made a bit of a difference! Can't wait to do the air box next!
For those who haven't done the dead weight removal yet, just use the 17mm side of the crescent wrench in your tool bag. ...and a bit of elbow grease, but DO NOT undo the nuts all the way, just enough that you can wiggle the thing out of the brackets. A bit of a tight spot to try and dig loose hardware out of. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/dry.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Glad I found this thread....digging around the trunk for the first time today--whole lot of scratching my head as I looked at that cylinder.

Now about the amp that's on the drivers side of the trunk; looks like it belongs on a shelf inside a recording studio/living room....RCA plugs, really? Anybody?

re: stereo stuff - every car amp i've ever had used rca plugs. not sure what the problem is there.

IDK, the thing just looked prehistoric or clunky. I've never really done any stereo work, so I guess more research is the order of the day!
