Have oil pump gasket leak that dealer requires $1,600+ to repair. At this point I choose to maintain the leak and drive on since I am not a mechanical wizard and that would be a challenging task. Any suggestions or other ideas. Car is 1995 coupe, manual, 121,000 miles, in good conditon.

Find a good mechanic who will charge you much less than the stealership. PCA may be able to help, or other P owners in your area. I found 2 good mechanics from members on this forum.

Unfortunately there is no such oil pump gasket only a locktight sealant I would guess that the crank seal is leaking or oil pan gasket. If the oil pump is leaking then that’s a very deep repair and one of those while you are at it you may as well replace rollers belts water pump etc. Also make sure that there is no oil on the belts or your repair may grow 10 times.

Could be a lower balance shaft seal as well. When these engines get caked with oilly crud it is hard to tell what is leaking. I would clean the mess up and then try to find the culprit.

When were your belts done last. It may be a good time to replace those if all the front end parts have to come off anyway.

Thanks for all of your ideas. Belts, rollers, water pump, etc replaced about 9,000 miles ago by previous car owner, Jan 07. Will review with dealer tech and explore further.
