Tar Removal - Gotter - 05-12-2008
Had to drive to Tucson las week, and didn't know they were laying new pavement (actually they must have done it earlier in the week, all their equipment was gone) along the final 10 miles before the interstate. I had no option but to try and go slower on the semi-fresh tar. No globs, but there is a film along the bottom of the exterior from the trip (rockers, etc.). <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/sad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
What's worked for you guys to get this crap off?

I've never tried this personally, but I've heard butter works great at removing tar. I usually stick with good old fashioned Turtle Wax Bug and Tar remover...the yellow creamy stuff in the can. Dupont used to make a great tar remover (Dupont No. 7) but they took it off the market 'cause people were mis-using it and it was taking paint off.
That picture Jay posted was mine when I was removing the sill plates installed by the PO!

I have tried butter, and it works! The only thing you have to worry about it an oily residue left behind, nothing a good wash can't fix <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Ren - that's excellent to find out first hand that butter does indeed work!
Now for the rest of you, the beer will not remove tar...I repeat, beer will not remove tar. It is for human ingestion only...your car will not appreciate it. I don't think it will harm the paint, so if it does happen to spill, you should be OK. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Mind you that the older the tar, the harder it is to remove. So get it off while its still fresh; there is only so much butter can accomplish!
