I thought I'd let all know - today is my 40th wedding anniversary. During the course of today, I gave some serious thought to the future, and told my wife that I'd decided to re-up.
The car-related part of the story is that when we got engaged, I told my (then-)girlfriend that I couldn't afford to purchase an engagement ring, because I HAD to purchase a Corvette!
We got through that, and about 18 months later I surprised her with a ring while we were parked in the 'Vette. She's been tolerant (but never particularly enthusiastic) about my car-thing ever since.
OK, that's it - a very long story made very short. Thanks for "listening".

Congratulations!
I suppose that if she "understood" a corvette was more important to you than an engagement ring for her, you must have known at that point she was a keeper.
Best wishes for 40 more!

Congrats Ancorman! Its hard work but worth it IMO.
As for the car thing, tolerance is better that defiance.

We're approaching our 32nd anniv. this summer and mind you, that's without affairs all those years <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rolleyes.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
( well, ok, the emotional attachment to the 968 is an "affair" , but one which hopefully ALL of our significant others can understand and tolerate <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> )

We just celebrated 4 years...only 1/10 of your patience...but since my wife agreed that the 4th anniversary is "performance parts" I have no doubt that we will endure...
Congrats,
Jay

Thanks for the comments and support. My wife considers my 968 to be the equivalent of the "$6 million dollar man" (some of you may remember that show). I tell her that it's instead of golf fees (or a mistress!). It wasn't easy to get to the 40-year stage - but we certainly feel it was (and continues to be) worth the effort. When people ask about it, I say that I'm not sure if it was stubbornness, stupidity, lack of willingness to make a change, love, dedication...or all of the above. Without doubt, though, part of it is simply old-fashioned belief in the vows of "...'til death do us part."

yeah, and then in a few years you come to the conclusion that when vowing "'till death do us part" you were actually setting a goal <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/laugh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Congrats Anchorman!
I'm approaching 10 years, next year. When we went to purchase her engagement ring, I told her there was a catch... we needed to stop by the Porsche dealership to put a $1000 deposit on my Boxster. She agreed! Didn't rent a limo for the wedding,
drove the Boxster!

My sincerest congrats Jim!
I believe in the "til death do us part" deal as well... Can't imagine being married to anyone else. This year will be 9 for me. Pales in comparison to 40...
I wish you another wonderful 40!
Jim

Bravo and congrats. I'm a firm believer in your above words and feel too many throw away marriage instead of strengthening them.
PS I wouldn't mind the long story.

Congraulazoni per 40th. Anne and I celebrated our 35th on June 2nd. She is not a car person but has tolerated my passion. At the time we were dating I had a '68 911E that broke down frequently. She doesn't drive the 968 as she is not a stick shift driver. We are going to do a trans Canada railway trip in August for our Anniversary trip.

Again, thanks for the thoughts.
Cosimo, I'm very interested in learning about your trans-Canada trip. That's something that Ellen and I have talked about for many years, so your experience will be quite helpful.
My wife is also not a stick shift driver - I tried to teach her on the aforementioned Corvette, but when she came really close to putting the rear end against a fire hydrant (before we were married, I might add), that was the last lesson.

Sounds like the 'sure honey - drive it any time - just don't wreck it, or dent it, or put a scratch on it, or get it dusty, or ......' Works every time.
I did find out though that the wife has been surreptitiously parking the mondo van next to the 68 in the garage for some time now though. She can drive a stick but seems a bit intimidated by the beast. I am going to get her behind the wheel, as soon as I get my low RPM stumble resolved. Can't have her dumping the clutch at 5K at a stop light, or stalling on an incline.
