My new exhaust brand "Kunz" - Kunz - 07-14-2008

Hi there

As I had some time today I made one of my many old ideas come true; I built my own exhaust. I was never very pleased by the original or Cargraphic twin-pipe design as I was sure it would prefer the higher frequencies. So this morning I went to a friends garage where I could do all the work.

I made a 2 1/2-monotube-design with a resonator and a main-muffler fitted to the original 4-2-1-header and the stock catalytic converter. I could also have used my RSbarn header and 100-cell-cat but as I got to know over the last 15 years I didnt want to lower backpressure too much; even this will give great gains under 3000rpm it could lead to loosing significantly above 5000rpm. Also - and even I made some good power using the RSbarn header - I found it would make the sound of the car a bit noisy / ricey (or how do you say?) and I hoped I would get a nice deep and not too loud tune. So it all was a bit of a compromise... The resonator and muffler are Magnaflow universal parts.

It all took me some 4 hous to manufacture the exhaust, but in the end I was under great pressure (remember that befor criticise the welding as well as the fact that I am a doc and not a mechanic) and I didnt have the time to make pics of the system on the floor nor could I take the weight (which is about half of the stock system). Still I tried to get you some impressions...

Also I made several GTech Pro RR-runs befor and after which gave me consistent results. After was a bit heavier than befor due to my little son assisting me on the testdrive and some 10l more of fuel. Unfortunatelly I didnt have My laptop to pull the runs, so I got the datas in EXCEL-form. Still - as you can see - I was able to make some gains; a lot under 3000rpm and significant from 4000rpm up to redline...

The sound is as I wanted it deep, not too loud, not ricey at all. If I manage I will take some clips and post them here.

OK, that's all for today!

Pretty impressive! I can't wait to hear the sound clip.

Cool, Doc. Will you make me one for a $30 copay?

hahah..heeeee...that's a good one, gryphon.

Hi there

I posted this one for you to hear on youtube...

I recorded it this morning, so a bit darkish, but what you want to know is the way it sounds!

PS:

I am a generalist, Medical Director of the Center of Recruitment (Swiss Armee, Lt Col), and practice in my sparetime as a family-doc here in the region.

My new exhaust brand "Kunz" - rhudeboye - 07-16-2008

I like it. And for a youtube video the sound came through pretty well. Doesn't sound rice but has a nice deep tone.

PS. Quiet brakes!

Speaking of sound. I was driving to a dentist appointment (ugh) and a pick up truck, a pick up! was along side a stop light. He gave me the thumbs up. I rolled down the window and he said "I love the sound" (B& and asked if the car was the last of the 928s. Not having time to discuss the history of the 968, I said yes. He said "great" and we drove off as he floored it as he wanted to show off that his pick up could beat the "Porch". It made the drive to the dentist a little more of a pleasureable.

Nice sound

Great job Kunz. Man your car is clean on the bottom. By the way...where are you located? Across the big pond?

My new exhaust brand "Kunz" - unknown4u - 07-16-2008

Very nice sound!. I completly agree with the others!

My new exhaust brand "Kunz" - xrad - 07-16-2008

yep. sounds good!

Well Done...

BTW, are those Koni coil-overs in the rear or ?

My new exhaust brand "Kunz" - rhudeboye - 07-18-2008

no replies from Kunz. Must be off working on the next project.

Hi friends

Sorry for not answering... Indeed, I was getting together all the old stuff like the RSbarn header, my 100-cell-cat... I hope I will find some time during the next days to install everything again, make testdrives, record the sound and post it all here.

The Brakes!!! Yes, Pagid yellow; great performance but can be a bit of a pain driving around in town!

I live in Switzerland, in the midle of Europe ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Z%C3%BCrcher_Oberland )

The Suspension: It is the stock MO30 of my CS; for the road still very good in my eyes.

Actually all the "research" I do here is just for a short time as I hope the get the SC finally installed in August (2008 I hope!). But as the blower will give great gains up the revs I still feel it could be good to have some solid torque down the revs at lower boost.

My new exhaust brand "Kunz" - flash - 07-18-2008

lol - is being "in the middle of europe" a political or geographical distinction?

My new exhaust brand "Kunz" - ds968 - 07-18-2008

Kunz, definitely a good, deep, impressive note ! nice results, well done job !

btw, xrad - your first post on this thread :

My new exhaust brand "Kunz" - Kunz - 07-19-2008

Hehehe!

To go out of topic quickly; Switzerland was always something special...;-)

And to go back agin:

Thanks for all your feedbacks!

I really wonder how it will all work together with the RSbarn header and the 100cel-cat. Some years ago going from stock header, a 200-cell-cat and the Cargraphic catback to the upper setup gave me huge torque from 2000-3250rpm but made me loose quite a bit up the revs. So this could happen here again even though I feel the monotube-design could be better. And still I will do it because with the blower everything will change and I will need low backpressure to keep termal stress as low as possible...

My new exhaust brand "Kunz" - xrad - 07-19-2008

blower?.........hmmmmmmm

" huge " and " quite a bit " can be rather subjective ; can you give us an idea what numbers you registered for the low-mid torque gain as well as loss at the higer end ( at what rpm range was that ) ? Also, in spite of the increase, did it still parallel the stock power curve and the dip we see on all the charts for this car ?

My new exhaust brand "Kunz" - Kunz - 07-20-2008

Hi ds968

Huge means about +40Nm between 2000 and 3250rpm, quite a bit means a drop from 221 hp @ the wheels to about 212hp @ the wheels top performance (dyno).

My best setup for top performance was up to now:

Stock header, stock cat-shell with 2x200-cell-metal-monolite-cats, cargraphic catback (all straight through), + changing the cams timing, stock airbox

My best setup for torque at low to mid revs was up to now:

Rsbarn header, stock cat-shell with 100-cell-metal-monolite-cat, cargraphic catback, with the same cams timing as above, open airbox (quite the same as the airbox mod).

My best overall setup is up to now (more torque overall, no dips, same peak performance as best setup):

Rsbarn header, stock cat-shell with 100-cell-metal-monolite-cat, cargraphic catback, with the same cams timing as above, airbox mod "Kunz", E85-tuned with 48lbs/h injectors.

This last version was not on the dyno but I had many runs with the GTech Pro RR befor and after.

I would love to post dyno sheets here to visualice the things said but the "Laufwerk" / RAM? of my old, capitaly damaged computer still sits here next to me and cant be read again...
