countries' car ownership statistics - ds968 - 07-31-2008

picked this from today's misc. headlines :

Top 10 countries in order of per capita car ownership :

Portugal

U.S.

New Zealand

Luxembourg

Iceland

Italy

Australia

Japan

Slovenia

France

The lowest of the top 10, France has 5.9 cars per every 10 people. Portugal at the highest per capita rate, has 7.73 cars for every 10 people.

Fascinating, considering most of the other countries’ public transportation puts the U.S. to shame, and given the urban center population concentration vs. U.S. suburbia spread would lead one to believe there is far lesser need for a car elsewhere. So it looks like it has nothing to do with "necessity" doesn't it ?

Interesting. If some other measure was looked at, such as related to miles driven (per car, or per capita), I wonder if you'd see more impact of either public transportation or country size.

good point.

and LOL, on the "miles driven" criteria if you drive a mile and a few yards in Luxembourg, you're likely crossing the border into another country <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> so wouldn't the remaining trip's miles data then be attributable to the neighbouring county, skewing the national statistics ? <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/unsure.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
