Hey everyone,

Looking to replace my Becker CR-1 (M490) Hi-Fi Option Stereo with a new unit. The CD changer stopped working Sad But, I do want to keep it as retro and original as possible. The Continental (VDO) TR7412UB-OR Bluetooth Head Unit or the CD7416U-OR CD player model seems to be the best choice, because largely the fact that BergvillFX in Norway does a plug and play harness for Porsches with the hi-fi option.

Very cool.

Has anyone installed this unit in a 968? Does it work/fit? ECS Tuning says the radio doesn't fit, but that doesn't make sense to me. It could be because of the wiring compatibility. It's just a single DIN size, and with the custom harness allowing you to keep the Nokia amp underneath the seat, I don't see what the issue is.

Thoughts?

Did you end up going with this setup?

I did, and I'm very happy with the look and performance. Nice chatting with you via e-mail. Have you decided to purchase it? I still think I'll invest in a new underseat amp. We'll see.

Conti purchased VDO I think and you can also find a VDO identical version to the Conti.  I liked the VDO slightly more do to the blue face vs the orange/yellow on the Conti  Everything else the same as far as buying harness adapters from Bergville etc..

Both of them look really good in these cars a a near factory look.  Not really HiFi but good enough with newer Bluetooth and phone features to get by.

Thanks for the replies. I've ordered the Continental and harness from Tore at BergvilleFX. Once I get it installed I'll update with my thoughts own the sound. I know it's not the best audio choice, but it looks most appropriate for the 968 IMHO and it can't sound worse than the CR-1!

Next up might be to replace the amp, does anyone know where to get a replacement? Alternatively I could bypass it but that's also more work.

Cheers

<p style="color:rgb(40,40,40);font-family:helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">Well to be honest. I really want to go with the original when I replace it. I go to Sonnen Porsche's (dealer north of San Francisco) website for almost ALL of my parts. They are simply the cheapest Porsche parts in the USA. I don't know how they stay in business in the Bay Area. I live in Hawaii and it's still by far cheaper to ship parts out here. I hate Hawaii car dealers and part depts. But, that's another story. You're in England though, right?  With the cost I'm looking at the site right now, a replacement amp (I think it's a Nokia brand) is $214, by far cheaper than any other genuine amp I see for 911s/Macan/Panameras. That's the amp that came with the M490 upgrade. Part # 944-645-301-X (replaces 00). There's a $136 core charge. Hmmmm , didn't see that before. To me, I don't want to tear up the orig harness and I want to keep the M490 option as original as possible, etc. I'll probably order it soon.

Hi,

To those of you who have installed the Continental radio, I have a 968 manual coupe and a 2001 Boxster S, and am considering the continental radio unit for both cars.  I think these look very stock.  My 968 has a pioneer unit and I hate it.  As I swap cars with my wife (she is a newly minted rev head) and son on a regular basis, I really need the unit to store multiple paired phones, and even better if it will auto-connect to whoever is driving the car.  Does anyone know if the unit works in this manner?  The manual is simply silent on this, and VDO has not responded to my query.

Sadly, my 968 is awaiting parts to replace the A/C compressor, condenser and evaporator, so having a break whilst I prepare myself for the shock of how costly this is.  However, with all that glass, A/C is essential in sub-tropical Brisbane, and luckily 968's in Australia are trending up in price pretty sharply.  We are having a lively discussion at home about which car is more rewarding to drive.  It is a close call I have to say.  One thing that is super interesting, is that most people who come up to me to ask questions and admire the 968 are younger.

Thanks in advance.
Peter

Have you considered the new Classic PCCM unit? It's spendy but it checks all the boxes and it's Porsche factory. I bought one for my 92, my installer can't get to it till after the holidays but it looks promising.

Had one of those, the Sat screen is tiny, runs on windows CE, for $1200 I would do something else

I paid £200 for it as it had two blown capacitors, I repaired it used it and sold it for £400

The new-ish Blaupunkt Bremen SQR DAB is looking good for anyone wanting a stock-look headunit. I think my car came with a Blaupunkt Symphony when I bought it. I replaced that with a Becker Mexico CC which lasted until I got fed up with the sticky knobs and poor quality audio. The Becker was replaced with the Continental CDD 7418UB which is okay-ish. Certainly looks the part, audio is passable but my speakers are originals and have big issues. Came with HF phone kit, loom adaptor, DAB antenna.

The Bremen is Bluetooth, USB, SDHC, DAB+ and RGB illumination, so any colour display and backlighting you feel like trying!
