Add me to the list of odo/tripmeter failures. Any recommendations? Should I call Jeff at odometergears? Which do I get? Since my speedometer works I'm assuming/hoping it is the gear. Has anyone posted DIY instructions with pix?
Thanks!

I did see the DIY. check this site. Once the cluster is removed (steering wheel removed makes it easier) It is not hard to remove the speedo and replace the broken gear...small piece!
Jeff is a good source for the odo gear.

search " odometer gear". it goes to the discussion.

Maybe the odometer/speedometer should have its own forum altogether...
Yes, I'm in the middle of my fix, and looking closely at my gears. They look fine. The 12 tooth is yellow, but not missing any teeth. I've given them some pushing, and none are even brittle...
As a check, when the gears are installed, I can't rotate the odometer dials, but with the stepper motor and the gears out, they spin freely. I think I need to look somewhere else. Note, the speedometer is out, also. (Looking at things, I think that the speedometer is simply an electomagnet powered from the two stepper motor wires that go between the main and trip odometer dials.)
You may realize that I took off the dial and faceplate before I understood that this is not necessary for the gear fix. (Also yes, I bent the pointer.) *However,* I think that this is a good way to see if it's a mechanical or electrical problem... If the odometer numbers spin with everything engaged, it's obviously the gears. If the odometer numbers don't spin... probably not the gears, right? For those who have had *both* odo and speedo go bad, perhaps it is the electrical contacts, or something else keeping the signal from making it to the stepper motor? The removal and reinstallation of the gauge would provide renewed contact, making it feel like the gears fixed the spedometer, even if it was just the reseating of the gauge.
It doesn't seem like there is any mechanical connection between the very mechnical action of the odometer after the stepper motor, and the speedometer. The speedometer seems to be completely electrical, and powered simply by the two wires coming off the stepper assembly.
Also, looking at my connectors, the four pins sticking out of the white plastic housing for the instruments, they are *white* with corrosion. I think cleaning the connections and perhaps a wipe with some dielectric grease may solve a problem that is right now, baffling me.
Any thoughts on this theory, and the latest update to the ultimate-of-all-968-strings would be appreciated.
Jim

I have the gears I need, 15 tooth plus a choice of 16 or 17 toothed pod gear. Just have to summon the will to do it. Did someone mention wiggling the 10's counter around to settle the pod gear in mesh or was that Clarks garage or something? Great idea just to remove the motor for access to the gears! Hope it all works out. Of course I will need to book into the Priory for a weeks worth of drying out first, just to get my vision in focus.

I replaced both gears when mine stopped working last year. They are available on a number of sites, and the prices are somewhat variable. Since it's kind of a pain-in-the-butt job, I went with the more expensive gear because it was made from better plastic and "should" last longer. While I was in there I replaced the reflective surfaces on the dash with foil, replaced all the bulbs, and cleaned the nut contacts for all the gauges. After that little cleaning, my gas gauge went almost all the way to full and my other gauges became a great deal more responsive. Up to that point the most the gas gauge would read was 3/4 when the tank was full.
I went with the instrument bulbs recommended in another thread that were considered the highest wattage that you can use without melting the light tunnels. They are all available at the local parts store, so Porsche doesn't get your money this time.
Not a terrible job, but a bit time consuming and tedious. Honestly, the hardest part was getting the cluster out and removing the connectors. After that, the rest was pretty straightforward.

User clark's garage for the steering wheel, console and gauge removal. Look in the 'garage-shop manual' link. Under the ELECTRICAL section, there is a link to the 'Odometer repair'.
Use this video to see how the loosen the motor from the gauge. Our 968's mechanism is the same as the 993. The 968 gauge motor detaches nicely allowing the gears to be R&R's without any funny tools. Remove both parts and count the teeth and order accordingly. I ordered the big gear and small gear to be sure. I needed the 17 tooth gear.

Here are the parts:

I did this on the past weekend and now my car ages again.

I used surgical gloves to keep any finger prints off the gauge.
New and old Gears. (You can see the missing tooth on the small yellow gear)
Motor removed. The wires stay connected, but there is enough play to get in there.
Clean motor spindle and blow any possible leftovers out. Fit gears and re-assemble.

thanks for posting the video. I found it valuable to be able to explain it to my mechanic. He is also going to view it so he can learn how to change it himself. Great job.
Also I agree that all these posts should be in it's own tread as it took me a wile to find the treads at the site, as putting trip odometer did not work

Quote:There is also a write-up at http://www.clarks-garage.com under the "Garage Shop Manual" section. The 968 uses the 15 tooth gear.
I can not find the article at Clarks garage today. Do they take these off their site?
And while I posted the other day that it was only my trip odometer my main odometer stopped working as well. Call Marque Motors my mechanic, who sends his speedos to a place in California and has been sending them their for 3o years so he trusts them. I wish I could find out the name of the place to pass it onto you.

I used Stanton speedo tach in the past with great success. They worked on some smiths gauges and they turned out very well.

Williamos : Its still there. Navigate : Garage Shop Manual ( Left side bar), then look on the far right column labeled 'ELECTRICAL' in red. Under Gauges is the removal of the 85.5 gauges, and slightly lower down is the Odometer Repair.

Planning to change both gears on mine next week, along with bulbs. Odometergears.com lists pod gears of varying number of teeth (12, 16, or 17 teeth). Is there any way to know which one I need prior to taking everything apart? Mine is a US spec, 1992 standard Coupe. TYIA

I just did mine a few months ago and used the gears from odometergears.com. Mine is a 1992 US spec as well and I ordered the 15 tooth gear (E15 on their site) as well as the 16 tooth small pod (16 tooth Pod/Small) and was able to repair my issue with those.
I posted here on my experience (with pictures and links to reference websites/docs) here at

Don't you hate it when you do a job, put it all back together, and it doesn't work? Uggghhh!!!! I changed the gears out (my 1992 Coupe was also 16 tooth pod gear). Found the small 15 tooth gear missing a tooth. Put everything back on, including re-mounting the OE steering wheel in place of the Cup wheel. Took it out for a drive and the odometer wouldn't work. But I was able to reset it. Then I noticed that the speedometer and tachometer needles were setting on zero. Neither working. The outside small gauges on either side appear to be working fine (voltage, oil pressure, fuel, temp). Just the speedo and tach not working. Now I'm debating if I have the intestinal fortitude to take it back apart tonight. I suspect I didn't get one of the ribbon connectors properly plugged into the back of the instrument panel. I hate re-working! But I guess it's my own fault.

That'll be "yep" x about 1750pax.
I also have to do mine for a second time as I was sent the wrong gear and my original was completely chewed up, so nothing to compare. I've been wait for a few items to arrive before I get in there again. Good luck!
