Hey, the coupe is considerably faster, far more rigid / better handling, a lot more practical ( more room for everything and anything ) safer, and all we have to do is remove that huge sunroof to turn it into the same ( ok, 75% of it ) " driving experience " a cab offers. Take that wind and stick it your hair, lol ! But you're right, fun stuff and as they say, " different strokes .. " I was just trying to steer Anthony in the right direction for his next car.

When Bob remembers to add the Cab-Hard-Top Conversion to his to-do list, it'll be a moot point. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

No kidding, would't that be the ultimate project ?! ;-) :-). An automatic / retractible hard top would probably cost no more than

$ 50,000 to retrofit on these cars :-). I'm in line for one .

MY 968 was totaled - tamathumper - 08-05-2012

I was just thinking of a hard top that comes off in one piece, but hey that's a good idea too!

Hi,

Just as an update I called about the 968 cabriolet.

Did not sound as good as I thought, so I am going to look at the 951 tonight.

He wants $9995 for it.

So far I know roof does not work, cracked dash, air conditioner does not work.

Don't now what else until I look at the car.

I think he is asking to much.

Even if that is all that is wrong, I will offer at most $8900.00,

Or is that even to much for a car 26 years old. (I do not believe the mileage is really 66K.

BTW: I used to own a 87 944S and a 83 944. The were fun to drive, but were no 968.

I am assuming this one will drive about the same but faster. Maybe even faster then the 968.

Thanks for any advice, you all have been a great help,

Anthony

The sunroof can be a pretty easy DIY fix - If the motor itself works, I would assume stripped gears. Even if it's the sunroof motor, not hard to swap out - it's easily accessible. There is a very good writeup on http://www.clarks-garage.com/

AC on the other hand - that could be a somewhat expensive repair depending on what's wrong with it. It could be as simple as needing new refrigerant, or as much as replacing the whole system.

The cracked dash - a used dash without cracks should cost in the 350-450 range, mine took me about 8 hours to swap. Could probably do it in half that now that I know what I'm doing...

If I were you, I would get a <acronym title='pre purchase inspection'>PPI</acronym> on the car by a local Porsche specialist before finalizing the deal. It could reveal worn parts that might end up costing you a lot. Definitely go look at it first to make sure it's something you really want.

Another cab popped up in New York here that could be worth a call:

Also, a coupe on the other side of the country:

I would not pay more than 7500 for a 951, even if it was in mint condition, but that's just me, It still looks like a dated, inexpensive car. The cabs are less so, but then again the 968 cabs look less dated than our coupes also ( BTW, I also had 944s for nearly 18 years and enjoyed the driving experience even as underpowered as it was..). The majority of 951s / earlier ones are actually a bit slower than the 968 , only the last generation 951s are a fraction faster, but it's not a material difference in street driving. However, they can be tuned with relatively inexpensive mods to increase performance significantly more than the 968 can with similar mods.

Anyway, I know they are still in demand and that's why the asking price is that high, but as you said, it's no 968 ! And that's an understatement. I'd wait and focus on finding a 968, you might regret buying 951' IMO you'll never regret buying a 968 .

MY 968 was totaled - flash - 08-07-2012

if they had ever brought the 951 cab over here, i would never have owned a 968. this might have been ultimately a mistake, but i would have fallen for the same reasoning as so many others. the ease of modification to achieve power is attractive. the part about the headache of maintenance, and the more dated look, is often overlooked because of it.

Thanks,

The car is the exact same color mine was, even the same color seats.

The only Difference was mine was a Coupe. (almost the same mileage, am I dreaming this)

I called and left a message with him to call back.

I will let you know what happens.

BTW: It is about 3 hours driving distance from my house.

Or I can drive to Bridgeport, and take the Ferry to port Jefferson, That will take about an hour less, and my 10 year old will get a free ferry ride.

Thanks again,

Anthony

Looks pretty decent, like the color, the paint doesn't look to bad with some good polishing that paint would look really good. Would definitely get a <acronym title='pre purchase inspection'>PPI</acronym> done on it, the plug for the timing belt inspection is missing and it's low on coolant. The interior looks good also, he doesn't have the boot on the top, make sure he has that, or a money negotiating point. I would also have him take money off for the lack of A/C, that seems a little odd that he opted to spend $165 on the A/C delete bracket then going with the very inexpensive weld that he describes. They usually crack if they have been impacted from the bottom, so a good <acronym title='pre purchase inspection'>PPI</acronym> should be done. http://longisland.craigslist.org/cto/3176491259.html

Hello again,

I called about the 968 in long island. http://longisland.cr...3176491259.html

It was in an accident 6 years ago from the original owner.

But he says it was repaired and he never had a problem with it.

Other then the air compressor.

He also bought it when he was 19 years old.

That is always a concern for me.

Mostly because I know how I would of treated a Porsche at 19.

He wants 11K

Does any one think I should pursue it, or just keep looking.

Thanks,

Anthony

not a bad looking car. the price is decent if everything else is good. you'd definitely have to check it out to know for sure.

I think one of the most important posts was what Flash wrote: be patient. To get the right 968 will take patience.

I guess the problem may be that you need a car pretty quickly. So my story in the same situation as you? I got a temporary car. It was an '84 944, only 64K miles, perfect condition, about $5K, had it within a week after the 968 was totaled. Yes, the 944 NA is no match for the 968 or a 951, but was still a nice experience. Then I had time to find the right 968, or consider repairing my totaled 968 that I got bought back from the insurance co. Repairing it was the right path, it took some months, but I had a decent but not most desirable car in the meantime. Then after the 968 was all repaired (my deadline was the Ortega Highway run in 2008) I sold the 944 for the same amount. With some maintenance, sales tax, registration costs, the 944 only cost me about $100-$150 per month, which is way less than most cars cost per month. And the end result was the best solution for me. I picked a 944 in very good to excellent condition so I could easily sell it again.

I even still have pics of the 944 here: https://picasaweb.google.com/syncronicity1/944 It was fun to experience this different car for a while, I let my son drive it as his main car for about 2-3 months after my 968 came to life, was great chance for him to become comfortable with a stick.

So, think about patience and getting a temp car. And maybe you prefer a coupe. You should be able to find a 968 that was not in an accident for the same $ that this one on Long Island has for an asking price. Buying the wrong 968 could cost you way more than the cost of a temp car.

Regardless of what you buy, get a <acronym title='pre purchase inspection'>PPI</acronym> done so that you have a reasonable idea about where the problems may be. I do think the being patient helps. It took me two years to find my 968 and I got the car I wanted at a fair price. With the <acronym title='pre purchase inspection'>PPI</acronym> results in hand I was able to negotiate a lower price than the car was offered at.

I should add, as many others have also stated, these cars are all now pushing 20 years of age or more and so finding a problem free car, or one with no cosmetic issues, or even one that hasn't suffered minor accident damage gets harder as time goes on. Mine got clobbered in the garage where I parked at work resulting in about $5,000 in body and paint work which might be a problem for some when it comes to sell it. But the car runs like a scalded dog and for me that is sufficient.

MY 968 was totaled - tamathumper - 08-07-2012

In general, I stay away from cars with non-working major components like A/C, sunroofs, etc. These cars are falling into 944-Land, where people can afford to own them but not maintain them. A used car with non-working major bits is just shouting "I never had my oil changed!", or "I make a funny (and expensive) noise when my transmission gets warm!"...

MY 968 was totaled - hot968 - 08-07-2012

I live on Long Island and could go over and try and see what this car looks like and if it seems the guy has taken care of it. I only have coupes but I know a few things that these cars have a tenencity to go wrong. I am Not a pro at all only may save you a trip across the sound. I would definitely recommend a <acronym title='pre purchase inspection'>PPI</acronym> if u decide to pursue this deal, as I would be very leary of the AC delete?? Why not repair it?? The accidnet may have been minor but needs to be checked by pro for future problems,

almost fell off my chair laughing when I saw the asking price of this one , reality pill needed here for sure.. .

...and watch out for those sneaky windows!

Quote: This particular car features luxurious leather interior, ice cold air condition system, and the connivance of power windows, making this a great buy.

Hello all,

Thanks once again for all your help.

I purchased a 968 yesterday.

It was less then 2 hours from my house.

I t has 230K on it. excellent body, paint, and interior, far mechanical, always maintained very well, have all records.

One problem, he said it needs some type of gear.

I forgot what it was called. He replaced alternator and starter. But sometimes when you go to start the car.

It makes a winding sound, and then you turn key off, turn key again and it starts.

Paid 7500, drives very good, other then that.
