Won't likely fit on the shade itself. The pads that I have seen, even for very small output, are not yet the size of a postage stamp, or a pack of smokes, which is what you would need to put it on the shade. Interesting idea for sure.

I bought the friction mounting base for my unit. Maybe you could incorporate the panel into the friction base (Can't use suction cups in CA anyway).

i'll have to look into it - i'm pretty busy right now gearing up for the paso robles run, and don't have the time to look up all of the dimensions of every unit, or then go off to a fabricator to see what is involved in mass production

Surely there is a smart EE on this site that can figure this out. And this is important. With a mod like this maybe I can go in the HOV lane. At least I can start wearing a smug save the planet smile while I am flooring it in 3rd up a hill.

if the Garmin uses a USB port for both power and interface to a pc like my TomTom, it likely needs only 5 volts dc at 100mA from a solar cell.

I'm pretty sure I can come up with something solar. However, there's one little problem that I see - does anyone ever use their nav at night? Lunar power isn't here yet.

Details... Most of the units have a few hours of battery power in them. So being it's night you should be able to travel fast enough before the battery runs out.

Added details...rainy or cloudy weather, not facing into the sun enough, etc. A solar charger could supplement, but couldn't replace, power from the car - unless a very different nav battery system is used, which goes far beyond what we're looking for. This from a solar guy...

my thoughts are that it would trickle charge, thereby extending the battery capacity from say 4 hours to 6 or 8 when in use

I'm not following the math, but no matter what, I don't think there's any way to rely on solar charging if you want to rely on always having the nav available and working. If the nav is sacrificial, that's a totally different story.

Well go back to my other idea, a wind tubine on the side mirror. Think how cool you will look in California, and the hybrid drivers will be envious.
