Not necessarily. This is as much a game ( no different than any professional sport ) affected and driven by the psyche of the players and the team just as much as it is by their talent and capabilities .. a 2-2 score might have made a world of difference in the confidence and the tactics employed for the the rest of the match.. so no there's no guarantee that Germany would have won that one 4-2.. granted, they were the better team IMO, but "better" teams have managed to lose matches in this and in every other world cup, so you never know..

BTW, England's goal was still not as big of a blunder ( the ball was behind that line for a blink of an eye ) as Argentina's first offsides goal.. Tevez was parked there with flashers on, the truck's tailgate open and was setting up the picnic table for quite some time at a HUGE distance from anyone else at the time...how in the world can ALL the officials miss that ?!

Well, the refs have been suspended by FIFA, so maybe others will learn from this..

While i agree with you, there is no guaruntee that the score would have remained 2-2 or that england would have won. Even if the goal was counted, i doubt England would have won...especially considering the embarressing game play they have showed us in the first round.

On another note...i'm hoping to see Ghana, Netherlands, Germany, & Spain win in the quarterfinals.

For those interested. A chart of every team that made it to the semi-final since the second World Cup in 1934. 1930 is cut off.

Here are the 4 finalists in 1930....

1. Uruguay
2. Argentina
3. united States
4. Yugoslavia

GO HOLLAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a great game, i'm so glad Holland took down Brazil.

No football / soccer ? - Johannvb - 07-02-2010

Viva Holandia!!

No football / soccer ? - Langley968 - 07-02-2010

Just for that (and even though Dad and Mom are Dutch), I'm going for ARGENTINA now!

Congratulations to Holland, who were able to be opportunist on Brazil's mistakes! Holland did not win the game... Brazil gave it away. First goal was Julio Cesar's only mistake in the tournament, the second goal resulted from a corner-kick that the Brazilian defender should NEVER have given away. When clearing the ball on defense you ALWAYS try to clear to the side-line and NEVER over the goal-line. As a result the Dutch converted the corner-kick into a goal. Brazil should (and could) have been up by 2 or even 3 goals in the first half. But... as the Brazilian saying goes "He who does not score, will be scored on". that ball was going in the net regardless of wether or not the brazilian players head grazed the ball. Brazil went down a goal and became unsettled and uncoordinated. Netherlands capitalized and produced a much deserved Victory....and a little pay back for their last two meeting's. Brazil should have never underestimated the Netherlands....they have been one of the worlds strongest teams for many years.

No football / soccer ? - ds968 - 07-02-2010

well, if we're talkning about " should have been " the dutch would have had at least two more goals.. twice they had not two, but three on one scenarios..which in a professional match would yield a goal 99.99% of the time. guess not today though.

but I'm thrilled with the result. and kudos to the ref.. finally !!.. fair calls all round, he took complete control of the game and players, with just enough tolerance for all the shoving and pushing and mouthing off ( i would have handed a yellow to that arrogant a-hole robinho after his second tirade )

No football / soccer ? - Johannvb - 07-02-2010

Well said Dan.

Great game. Uruguay should be ashamed of themselves. The way they won is nothing to be proud of. Ghanna played a slightly better game and deserved the victory, they were robbed.

No football / soccer ? - ds968 - 07-02-2010

Wow, and talk about nail-biting final moments, or what might have been final moments until fate decided that wasn't meant to be and bestowed a second set of final, final moments. A string of bad luck ( or good luck if you're Uruguay ) ending to the Ghana match.. The infamous "Baggio penalty kick" seems to have taken on new ownership a couple of times here also.

And now on to the real killer match tomorrow morning !!!

No football / soccer ? - biotechee - 07-02-2010

I watched a good portion of the Ghana/Uruguay game- I thought Ghana played slightly better during the regular/extended time. But, they goofed during the penalty kicks for sure.

Very tough game to lose.

I hope Germany wins tomorrow and I'm jumping on the Holland bandwagon!!

No football / soccer ? - SHA-JR968 - 07-03-2010

Best game ever for the German team.

Hopefully the Championship will be ours.

No football / soccer ? - ds968 - 07-03-2010

Phenomenal match ! Germany plays almost as well as they engineer and build cars

Still..I want to see Spain take the cup.

and.. another fun commercial , IMO.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9sE4GaFekI

No football / soccer ? - Fox944 - 07-04-2010

awesome commercial.

All my buddy's and co workers said Argentina would destroy Germany. None would answer their phones after the game....haha.

Germany's team is amazing. I look forward to watching their next two games. 3 European teams in the Semi's/

No football / soccer ? - Fox944 - 07-04-2010

With 14 goals, Miroslav Klose is tied with Gerd Muller (also from Germany) for 2nd place as World Cup top goal scorers. 1st place is Brazil's Ronaldo with 15 goals. Germany has 2 games left in this world cup regardless of what happens in the next match. If Klose can score 2 more Goals, he will be the World Cup's top goal scorer ever.

For Ref. Pele scored 12 goals, Klinsmann 11, & Maradona 8.

No football / soccer ? - Langley968 - 07-05-2010

Pele may only have scored 12 goals in World Cup games, but his record of winning three World Cup titles in a period of 12 years, will be an almost impossible feat to match.

We could see a re-match of the '74 final, where this time the Dutch hopefully will show a little more humility, and win their first title. A title that is long overdue, given the level of play that they have shown over the past 40 years.

Looking forward to the semi-finals.

No football / soccer ? - ds968 - 07-05-2010

" A title that is long overdue, given the level of play that they have shown over the past 40 years ".

If only life would work that way.. I completely agree with the remark above re Holland, although we all know this is a cruel sport with the outcome not necessarily in favor of the team that most deserves the title at any given point in time.

Perhaps FIFA should consider a best of three matches series for the semi-finals and for the final , still less than hockey or basketball or baseball but along the same concept where a team's fate is not simply at the mercy of a single 90 minute match where a single freak goal or worse, a PK shoot-out can decide it all..

No football / soccer ? - Fox944 - 07-05-2010

This is a game of champions. I love the fact that 1 game determines who is Winner. Turning this into a sport like baseball or basketball will take away from the sport imho. It is played once evey four years....win or go home.

Some would say Italy did not desrve to win the last World Cup....barly getting by with every match. Even in the game against France, they were outplayed the entire game....but managed to score 1 goal when up a man after Zidane was red carded. But regardless of how its done, if you win....you win. Thats the nature of the sport.

Ghana should have won, but they didnt. But thats ok....just leaves the Netherlands with an easier opponent in the Semi's.
