cloud - yeah - i read about it in a newspaper at the library, while looking for 78rpm LPs. people there were looking at me funny, but i think it was my leisure suit.

Ok, since the discussion has continued, I have to come clean -- my previous post of the Osmonds and Partridge family was one more failed attempt at humor, sarcasm, and tongue in cheek that never comes across in the written word. Oh, when will I learn!

So, on a more serious note:

- Very difficult subject -- since "best" can mean so many things like "greatest", "favorite", closest to the "root" of Rock and Roll, "highest selling", "most enduring", or "most innovative", etc.

- And then there is "rock band" which in a broad definition can I suppose could include "pop" "hip hop" "rap" "country rock" "techno" etc. Or it can mean "real rock and roll" which would not include these other genres. Or it can mean "artist" which I favor since so many supposedly rock music acts aren't artists at all -- they are pretenders who were "manufactured" acts created by producers just to make money. Or some were copy cats who wanted to be rock stars but were never artists.

Enough analysis.......!

- Greatest: Beatles

- Best (personal best): Pink Floyd

- Honorable mention: Grateful Dead

Roland

setting aside analytics like most sales, most hits, most influential etc, and going more subjective, like "if stranded on a deserted island with only one record and player" then

#1 - Allman Brothers, Live at the Fillmore East

#2 tie - CSNY, 4 Way Street and Little Feat, Waiting for Columbus

not a coincidence that they're live albums. To me, these bands were WYSIWIG; live performances were like their studio recordings; didn't rely on over-dubbing.

(and huge influences on my own guitar style)

lol - i mixed a show with little feat at a winery a number of years ago. great show. what a day. not "stranded on an island", but a pretty isolated day at a winery. can't say it could have been much better, so i get that.

I've seen Little Feat a million times. They always put on a good show. I actually was able to hang out with them for a little bit years ago when they were in England playing at the Hammersmith Auditorium. I was one of a handful of Americans who came to the show. They can't be considered among the all-time great bands though. Not in the same league with the Rolling Stones.

lol - yeah - little feat is better - no H3000 required.

Still fairly off the radar, but one of the biggest rock bands in the world right now: Muse

Stan Ridgway being my favorite musical genius.

let's put two others on the board:

ELO

Styx

What's the best rock band? - 968Syncro - 12-18-2012

Styx, Kansas, Foreigner, and Journey are really the same band -- at first starting with Grand Funk Railroad the same musicians used different band names at different times. You'd have to nominate them all. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rock.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

roflmao - had me going for a minute - since i know a lot of guys bounced around in that era, i had to check, but s far as i can tell, not a single member of any of those played in any of the others. i'm not sure you could pick 5 bands from that era and not have somebody in one of the others.

If we put "Art" in front of rock, I nominate Yes and Emerson, Lake, and Palmer -- just to add in another sub-genre.

Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells?

Being from the underside of the planet (well down under) - lots of Aussie bands probably no-one has heard of, INXS, Midnight Oil (the lead singer is now a politician - so that might rule them out), AC/DC, Angels, etc.

I suppose it is partly what you grew up with.

The Eagles were also a favourite for a long time. Surprised to not see them anywhere. No Bon Jovi, Motley Crew, Aerosmith, U2, Fleetwood Mac - hell, even though I didn't like most of his later stuff - the first 45rpm Single I bought was Michael Jackson (closely followed by Fleetwood Mac - Tusk). No Billy Joel, Eric Clapton, John Cougar (Melencamp, . . . .), etc.

Would be interesting to see the votes by age distribution.

It's amazing how his thread has morphed, this is what's great about a topic that catches people's interest. Good suggestion Craig. I hope you will be willing to compile the spreadsheet with the results! 56
