I have a question a little different from this thread but on a 92 coupe with original radio does it have an amplifier? I went to a guy to install a new radio as mine never worked and he said $300. including installation, unless there is an amplifier then he will have to re-wire the car? I don't know if we have an amplifier on Porsche radio or now> Thanks for any info

There are amps under the seats - search the threads here for stereo installations as I am told the wiring in the 968 is quite the opposite of most normal cars.

there are not always amps under the seats. it depends on which package you have. you could have none, 1, or 2



be aware that there is a powered antenna amplifier that must also be connected

Stereo install is NOT my expertise, but I can add a couple of things.

For a coupe the power antenna amplifier is in the base of the antenna, not a separate unit like the cab. If you have a coupe with terrible reception it could be that this amp (which sits atop the car in all the heat, sunlight and elements) has failed. It did on mine. A new antenna is $124.22 from Sunset and includes the mast.

Secondly, I happen to have my front seat out because of a stripped nut on the power seat front-back screw. So I can take a picture of the amp sitting under the drivers seat.m My car has the code 490 H-Fi Sound System.

Lear - thanks for confirmation that the antenna amp for coupes is in the base of the antenna (I thought it might be under the dash, as in the cab). My radio reception has always been terrible. Time to call Sunset.

the other thing to note is that the upgraded option changed from year to year, so what was in a 92 is not what was in a 94, etc, yet the option codes remained the same. one of these days i'm going to put up a spreadsheet. i think i have everything now.

My reception is crap as well but I assumed that was normal. My 944 and 944 S2 also had crap reception. Interesting to see if more than one person has positive results in replacing the antenna/amp.

This is how I retrofitted new tweeters into the door panels:



First pull the door panel off.



Then there is a threaded plastic ring that holds the speaker to the panel, unscrew that.



Remove the tweeter from door panel.



Using a small tool, just pull on the metal grate that is on top of the speaker. I used the hook tool in the picture below.

Once I removed the cover, I used a drill to drill all the way around the speaker, then I used a Dremel to cut between the holes and remove the speaker, leaving the frame left to install the new Focal tweeter in it:

Once I got the OEM ring to fit the new speaker, I used a high quality construction adhesive (Locktite PL Premium) that I had sitting around (always working on the house) and potted the speaker in with the stuff. I let it set up somewhat and installed the speaker in the door panel and screw the plastic ring on to hold it in place.



Just insert the metal ring back in and you are good to go.



NOTE: I chipped the black paint on the speaker grill when I removed it with the tool....you might want to paint it again with spray paint before re-installation if you are a perfectionist.



My new tweeters rock! I also had to run all new wiring to them from the amp in the spare tire area.

I have been contemplating have a new system put in the car ever since I discovered that only the rear two speakers work, but seeing the work needed to retrofit something in the car, I certainly don't want to do this myself and I am not completely comfortable letting someone I don't know tear my car apart. I guess I may never get tunes in the cab.

Might want to dig in there and be sure you have voltage at the amp also before buying a new one.

Great pics, Paul. I went through this exact procedure when I replaced my whole stereo system.



Inked - I'm no stereo installer pro at all. It's actually not that hard. Just take your time. The dremel tool is your friend!

Thanks for posting this, Paul. Your work is way out of my league but this thread has been very useful (both for info and motivation) as I plan my own modest stereo upgrade.



Maybe I missed this or you haven't gotten to it yet, but where did you put the ipod input port/cable?

SOO disappointed took the Porsche to have radio installed drove 2 cars all the way to East Meadow about 28 miles one way to drop Porsche off. The guy called me in 1/2 hour and said I had MAJOR electrical problems in this car and he had to show me. So we turned around and went back and he did have every thing going on and off by twisting the ignition key, lights would come , heater would go on, I never had any of this I turn the key and it starts and turn the key off and the motor shuts off????? I mean is it so hard to put a the radio with a simple new radio???? I am so frustrated with this whole thing I don't want a fancy system just a plain radio!!!! Where can I find directions for a simple replacement radio? HELP
