Getting under there and removing the mesh risk breaking the plastic shroud as it gets brittle. I just cut some white woven filter material to fit, put a couple pieces of double sided tape on the back and pressed them onto the screen. That way I can just pull them off when they get dirty without too much hassle. The filter doesn't get all the dust like a paper filter but it catches all the grit and bugs etc.
