Bob,

Any thoughts on running the SC on a daily driver...also is it still going to be CARB certified (living in California I wouldn't look forward to having to take it off every two years)....Thanks

Sam

Flash,
Welcome to the world of research. That's my profession. We have an idea write it up and submit it to the wolves ( the gov't). After the criticisms and continued experiments, we resubmit any changes to the funding group and if they like it then, we get funded. When our research occurs, it might take 1-4 years to publish a paper. In the mean time, we report to the funding committee w/ our progress. at the end of it all we then publish our paper, which is then subject to peer review. By that time our work is so polished, irrefutable, observable and most importantly, reproducible. We are world renown in what we do. We do make mistakes we just don't share the play by play points.( people take advantage in our discovery phase) It would have been interesting in the post to say " Hi I'm RS barn. we are making a SC for the 968. See you in 6 months". but the journey would not have been nearly as great. As you have discovered people always seem to take it in an unintended direction. They will always be those kinds of people out there. I just can't make everyone happy either in what I do. I think you have done excellent out of creating something out of nothing. You have my support as well.
I have followed your post all the way through. You have great project here. So don't let them steal your joy! When my time comes I'll make the call to your business and take it from there.
Good luck!

no worries - i also deal with the government on projects, so i completely understand the process - however, i wasn't prepared for what happened, as this is a hobby, and something i was really just doing for myself, but was happy to make more of for others - i just didn't expect quite so much criticism, at such a premature stage, and after specifically requesting for people to wait on commenting on certain things - but i really don't want to get back into that - moving on now

no worries - i'm fine - things are getting done - it's on track, and i'm very confident in the outcome - it's looking like it's only a matter of days now

most of the first batch is already pre-sold - there are only a couple of units left

back to work now

Samuel Taliaferro Rayburn (January 6, 1882 – November 16, 1961) was a Democratic politician from Bonham, Texas. “Mr. Sam”, as he was widely known, served as the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives for 17 years, and is widely regarded as the most effective Speaker of the House in American history.

The phrase, “a jackass can kick a barn down, but it takes a carpenter to build one,” is attributed to Rayburn.

i can now confirm that we will not be shipping ROW for at least quite some time

upon looking into the factory maps, there are 4 distinctly different maps for ROW - presumably these are for reasons of emissions or fuel differences (i.e. no-cat, etc)

these differences dictate new tuning to accommodate them - some may not be difficult, but we will not know any time soon - we really have no way of testing for the differences, and any attempt would only be a "best guess"

the primary problem is that there may not be enough room in the fuel supply to make the necessary accommodations - it would be extremely irresponsible to release a kit tuned for US emissions and fuel, and expect it to work ROW - we have no wish for anyone to have problems, and must err on the side of caution - there is far too much potential in the part throttle maps for a lean condition under those circumstances during off-boost/on-boost transition - this is an area generally overlooked by most people making kits (they usually only tune WOT, if you're lucky enough to get that), and this area is the one that creates problems, as that is where you spend the most time

sorry guys

Get Ready - Get Set - BLOW!!!! - DayDreamer - 03-30-2010

bummer.... Now I have to spend the money responsibly and continue to give my kids a good education

Get Ready - Get Set - BLOW!!!! - flash - 03-30-2010

lol - ship the car here (make sure the tank is full) - bring the kids - call it an "educational experience"

seriously - we'll look into it, but i'm not promising anything, and it won't be soon at any rate

Get Ready - Get Set - BLOW!!!! - firefish - 03-31-2010

I sure hope that you will find a way to be able to ship to the ROW. Considering that you (RS Barn that is) are already sending software for NA-engines, like the Stage 1 chip that I have, there shouldn't be an impossible task to provide software for a mildly supercharged engine as well, despite the sc being more sensitive. I have already started to save up the funds and I have a new beefier headgasket from RS Barn just waiting to go in.

Would it be an option to sell the hardware only, leaving it up to the ROW buyer to use for example a piggyback or complete new engine management?

Get Ready - Get Set - BLOW!!!! - flash - 03-31-2010

long before we get into attempting ROW setups, and certainly long before we let anybody mess with big changes like a stand alone system, we want our system out there and working perfectly on a bunch of cars - the last thing we want to see is somebody buy one, and then make changes, have problems, and blame in on the kit, and not the changes

let us get through the first batch of installs and have some time on them - then we will investigate more about the ROW maps and any other differences in the cars, and see if it can be done - maybe this summer

it will still come down to enough people lining up for a second batch though, and that is going to take some time

Get Ready - Get Set - BLOW!!!! - DaveN - 03-31-2010

I hope you will be pleasantly surprised on a line up for the second batch. I think there a quite a few people (like me) who just need that extra time to allocate the 4K+. I would gladly trade the worn out deck on my house for a SC but my dissagrees- somewhat
I'm in for round 2!

Get Ready - Get Set - BLOW!!!! - mrmister - 03-31-2010

I am about to start driving right now. San Francisco to RSBARN. Quick trip to the local mechanic. Bob, how is my supercharger coming along

I second that sentiment. So many of us are still licking our wounds to varying degrees as we slowly emerge from the nastiest economy in decades, but given another, say, six to twelve months or so, I suspect quite a few of us will be sufficiently recovered to start seriously thinking about things like the supercharger.

Get Ready - Get Set - BLOW!!!! - flash - 04-01-2010

i'm not worried, and as i said, as long as it doesn't cause me to seek therapy for the stress, i'm happy to do them

just to tease everyone, i put in the 18lb flywheel today, and determined 3 things:

1. the 12 lb flywheel will NOT work well with the supercharger

2. the 18lb unit does work nicely

3. the DMF will not have any problems

i also spent more time with the ROW maps, and did some research i still have to confirm, but for ROW cars that are running the factory catalytic converter, this will probably work - i'll fill everybody in when i can confirm what i learned today, so bear with me as i try to do that - it may take some time

in either event, having seen the "no cat" maps from the factory, and knowing how much fuel needs to be added for a car with no cat, it will probably be very difficult to tune to any car, US or ROW that has no cat or a small cat - we won't know for some time, but i'm not sure there is enough fuel available via the OEM injectors to have a safe mixture - we'll see

Get Ready - Get Set - BLOW!!!! - Cloud9...68 - 04-01-2010

I have a request for those much-envied folks who are are getting in on the first round of the supercharger. I assume virtually all of you are going to at least rebuild the head. For those of you who are planning to R & R the head yourselves, could one, or preferably a few of you, please put together a detailed, step-by-step DIY, with lots of pictures? Being able to do this job at home would really help bring a supercharger purchase/install closer to the realm of reality for many of us. Thanks!

Get Ready - Get Set - BLOW!!!! - Scott Collins - 04-02-2010

+1 on that request.

I know that I will need to get the improved connecting rods, which means lots of other things get done too.

Great idea Cloud!

Get Ready - Get Set - BLOW!!!! - flash - 04-04-2010

just so nobody thinks i've dropped the ball on this........

all is going well - tuning has been ongoing - we are confident that it will be right, and should be done in the next couple of days - this has been an ongoing process, and has already cost well into the 4 digit area for tuning alone - but, we want it RIGHT - this is also why nobody else does this - the tuning is what will make the kit stand head and shoulders above any other kit on the market - anybody who tells you that you have to tune it to a specific car clearly does not know what they are talking about, and is only trying to justify why they didn't go to the trouble - is your car currently tuned specific to your car? no - we are following the same procedures and reasoning the factory did, and will have the same safe and universally applicable tuning

i'll make a full announcement soon, but until then, i am still staying away from questions

Get Ready - Get Set - BLOW!!!! - bob blackwell - 04-04-2010

Good job,as usual, Bob. Keep on keepin on! Looking forward to seeing you when you come through Albuquerque, Bob Blackwell.

Since my engine is out and all apart, I may be a candidate for this. Thanks (I think) to Cloud9..68 for cluing me into this thread.
