Get Ready - Get Set - BLOW!!!! - flash - 03-10-2010

woohoo!!!

drove the car today - did some preliminary tuning - runs like a top - pulls strong and evenly - not done yet

wait for it..........wait for it.............still have a little tuning to do - lol

but, it's pretty close now - i need to lean it out in the mids and open it up a bit up top, but there is plenty of room for it, so i am not at all worried

my only bummer may be that i might not be able to run the 12lb flywheel - if i NAIL it and whack it to redline and then put my foot on the clutch and let it drop, it drops like a stone and the ICV can't keep up, so it dies - it's fine driving, and isn't an issue as long as i don't do that, but i'm just not sure if the ICV will ever be able to keep up - we'll see how that goes - i haven't even begun yet to work the WOT maps, and it may just be way off with no load on it

it's all definitely going to work though - very pleasant to drive - you wouldn't know it was there except for the speedometer

the other bummer was that the road i was using did not give me enough room to run 4th gear to redline, which is needed for the G-Tech - i haven't used my dynolicious yet to see what i need to get a reading from that - so, you'll have to wait until to morrow to get any kinds of power readings

lol - cool anecdote, just as we were leaving, figuring i got as much info as i was going to get with the setup i had, the police rolled in - seems somebody saw us and called them - narrow escape

Get Ready - Get Set - BLOW!!!! - PhilG968 - 03-10-2010

Very exciting, nice that the police didn't put a wrap on things!
This project makes me feel like I'm 20 again, can't imagine what its doing for you.
Excellent work, very much appreciated.

Get Ready - Get Set - BLOW!!!! - flash - 03-10-2010

lol - i'm definitely not going to need any magic blue pills any time soon

i just went out to move the car - dead cold - turned the key - fired right up and idled right away

i am so loving this

Get Ready - Get Set - BLOW!!!! - PhilG968 - 03-10-2010

Green with envy over here, but great to hear.

Get Ready - Get Set - BLOW!!!! - flash - 03-10-2010

thanks - yeah - it's running so well that i am going to drive it the 40 miles to the dyno, whereas i had planned to trailer it

Get Ready - Get Set - BLOW!!!! - RS Barn - 03-11-2010

Don't let Bob's cool demeanor fool you. He's been fretting over every detail.
We've had a zillion calls over details and tuning.
That's a good thing!!!

Get Ready - Get Set - BLOW!!!! - flash - 03-11-2010

lol - true enough

it has saved me a lot of time and effort to have a resource that has already generated a LOT of maps for this car - it really cuts down on the tuning process - the countless hours pete spent developing his chips has resulted in knowing what things do what and where - this allows me to skip several steps in the process, and will allow me to provide him with the information he needs to develop a new chip that will do everything we need for this kit

if you had to start over from scratch, the tuning process could cost a couple thousand dollars - that is exactly why the chip for this system will be code locked so it can't be broken into or copied

p.s. - working on the instructions again right now - i'm on page 23 - will probably end up about 30 pages

Get Ready - Get Set - BLOW!!!! - craigawoodman - 03-11-2010

With the tuning - what allowances will be made for differences in ambients (I know California can get hot but it is all relative) and other fuel qualities (91 octane is the poorest quality fuel you can get in Australia with most service stations providing at least 95 and 98 Octane)?

Is there the potential to add an intercooler into the mix - given my car already runs hot in high ambients without additional fuel/air being pumped into it. Will there be any mod's to the exhaust (one of the UK mod's quoted that you needed to replace the Cat's to de-restrict the exhaust as this was the bottleneck to the engine breathing well)?

You state you are looking for 2 - 5k rev range improvements - what if you want to track the car. Can it be tuned for the 3.5 to 6k range?

I am watching with interest the developments. Look forward to seeing a dyno output graph.

Thanks,

Craig

I'm crying here..... I have a 92, live very far away (Not quite OzSmile) so the shipping will hurt, and know I won't be part of the first batch as I need to get new rods first and that will hurt some more.... why, why, why me?

I can only hope that it will still be availablein a few years time and it will be well tried and tested

This is the most inspiring thread I have ever read. I liked the other turbo and SC threads as well but the details telling of all the progress, set backs and dedication of Bob and Petes experiences with this project. Very cool.

I don't have the cash at this point but I will own that SC as selling the car is not in my future plans.

I picked the right year to go to Hershey.. Oh and to Darryls shop.

craig -

there are no mods available for this kit, and most likely won't be, at least not any time soon - there are just way too many complications, and i don't want to get into that business - i wanted this for my car, and as long as i was doing 1, i can do more

higher quality fuel will not help, as we are tuning to 91 RON+MON/2 (or 95 RON)

an intercooler would only hurt this kit - you never want to put an intercooler on a low boost centrifugal setup - the restriction costs boost

if you want a track car, and the torque curve of this one doesn't do it for you, i'd look into a turbo

i'm not even sure we are going to ship overseas - i don't want to get into tuning for different fuels, and i won't take a black eye if i guess wrong

i cannot emphasize enough that this kit is going to be all it is going to be, and there will be no way to push it farther safely - i do NOT recommend attempting to develop more power with this kit than what it does out of the box

this is a STREET kit - it is not intended for the guy who wants every last pony, and big power up top - we are doing a number of things to push the curve downward to where most people drive, and are also deliberately holding the rev limit - these things are exactly why this kit will work better than any other out there for most drivers

seriously, please don't even consider this is you don't think the power is enough - you would be better served by doing something else - i know that sounds odd, but i'm more interested in a smaller group of very happy people, than a larger group of some who aren't so happy - there has already been enough of that with every other kit out there

Get Ready - Get Set - BLOW!!!! - Vedder - 03-11-2010

What do u mean... by not shipping over seas? How dare u?!!
Now lets not get silly. im putting my money away for this kit ok!?

Get Ready - Get Set - BLOW!!!! - sstman - 03-11-2010

Er.. yeah, why should you guys have all the fun, that side of the pond??, Im already looking into the rebuild of the engine, on my 92 in order to save up for the kit!.

Get Ready - Get Set - BLOW!!!! - ds968 - 03-11-2010

Well, for those 92s out there across the pond who can't get and bolt on this SC kit , if you were going to spend the dough in rebuilding the entire engine, boring it out to a 3.2 may not be a bad idea to consider. I could be wrong but guessing while you may not get quite the equivalent torque the SC will produce in the same RPM range, a 3.2 engine will offer a pretty damn close, respectable overall performance..

Get Ready - Get Set - BLOW!!!! - flash - 03-12-2010

i'm serious about not shipping overseas at least at this time - i will not warranty the kit in an untested scenario, and i have no way of testing a car over there - we already know that things are different, and i have no idea what would happen - i won't take a black eye over something out of my control - i'd have to know a lot more about the differences before i could get into that - sorry guys

but on to better news

went to the dyno today - had a nice drive of about 45 miles - car pulled VERY nicely - i was quite happy - not a bit of overheating or anything - 85 degrees outside - oil temp at 195 - water temp at 185 - saw it hit 195 for about 30 seconds when i first hit some top and go traffic, but it quickly dropped back down, and i was still in the stop and go traffic

i thought i was close on the maps, but when i got on the dyno, i found out otherwise - the good news is that once we got close, the power went up dramatically - i'm still not there, but i have the data now upon which to get a new chip made

there will be NO issues achieving the power i estimated before - i have already seen more than that and i'm not done tuning - it was very easy to get a 65 ft/lb gain, and i'm pretty sure we'll get to keep almost all of that when i'm done working out the safety margins

i am not quite ready to publish charts yet, because i really want to get the right chip in there first - i don't want to get into a bunch of dyno discussions, and the charts i have now would require too much explaining - let me get ones with the tuning done, and also ones of a stock car on the same dyno so you can see what is real

p.s. - stock injectors too

the bad news is that the 12lb flywheel is probably not going to work - the added drag of the supercharger, coupled with the ability of the rapid fall of the revs is likely to be more than the system can handle - it's fine driving around, but if you rev it too high, and then let it drop, it just can't catch it - going to try a couple of things, but i'm pretty sure 12 lbs is too light

this car is going to be very hard on my driver's license

Get Ready - Get Set - BLOW!!!! - timbits - 03-12-2010

That's awesome flash! It's great to hear that all the work on this project is coming together nicely. I'm excited to hear how it all comes togther when everything is fully tuned up and ready to go.

The supercharger isn't in the cards for me right now, but maybe someday...

Get Ready - Get Set - BLOW!!!! - flash - 03-12-2010

i got home rather late last night, and was fairly brief about the experience, so please excuse the lack of enthusiasm in my tone

driving the car is amazing - the torque available now is startling - it's much more than before i went out there

i goosed it while lazily turning a corner and got to see the back of the car from the front - it's quite a rush now, from very much lower in the rev band - it was late and i had an isolated drive home, so i didn't play with it, but i will today (it's a good thing too, because i passed a cop doing nearly 80, saw him pull out and flip on his party lights, and i thought i was hosed - he grabbed the guy behind me though)

i now fully expect to see every bit of my power estimates in big flat curves - it has been very interesting making changes and seeing what we can do the curves - it has also been interesting to see where the safety margins are - we found the injector limits, found the boost limits, and have already gotten an A/F line that looks great

this kit will be everything i had hoped - big wide torque curve, transparent operation, clean installation, safe and reliable power - you get to keep your AC, dual fans, all of that - but for the speedometer action, and if you listen very closely (at the right speed, and with the window down and no stereo on yada yada) the faint whistle on boost, youwould never know it was in there - this is EXACTLY what i wanted

Get Ready - Get Set - BLOW!!!! - flash - 03-12-2010

lol - just so you know i really did do this, here's a quick shot of the car on the dyno:

i'll now spend this weekend wrapping up the airbox, cover and all that, as i await the new chip and then another dyno appointment

Get Ready - Get Set - BLOW!!!! - Ryan - 03-12-2010

WOW...tail out action! "Torque....the drug of choice"
