Power Steering R&R - ds968 - 08-23-2021

Discovered that the P.S. belt does run independent of the Supercharger serpentine belt , BUT I spoke to Bob ( aka  “flash” )  the 968 guru if there ever was one, and he said that while you might get away driving for maybe a couple of thousand miles without the power steering and not do serious damage, if you continue like that for four or five thousand miles, you’ll most definitely blow the seals of the  rack and you’ll need a rebuilt . That or get a 944 S2 rack ..close to the same cost, if you  add the labor by someone else doing the job .  So I’m abandoning any thoughts of doing that , I don’t drive the car nearly enough to justify tighter steering than I have now . I’ve lived with this for ages, I can tolerate ages more .. it was just a passing thought.

Understood. I probably only drove the car 500 miles tops with the belt gone. I checked the rack/hoses at several points of my work recently, and its not leaking.I figure if it was ever going to leak, it would have been with that thin pentosin fluid in it.
