re: west end. yup - that's where i sent him, as well as quite a few others. after having multiple conversations about the 968, they now know exactly what to do. they aren't cheap, and the guy is a bit fussy (don't even think about being late or canceling your appointment), but he is the best i've found in 9 years of looking.

+1 on West End in Gardena for alignments. I will never go anywhere else again!

As for 968 savvy mechanics in our area, I haven't had tons of success. Tried Pristine Porsche - a little independent shop in downtown HB - they installed a balance shaft roller incorrectly and the belt was rubbing on something it wasn't supposed to and shredding. Had to be redone. They're primarily a 911 shop. They're great guys, but I can't recommend them for the 968.

I'm thinking of trying Einmalig, also in HB, to fix a large electrical issue (more of a disaster, really). They do restoration work on older Porsches and said they could handle it. Will report in if they successfully get my car back on the road!

I think I have relieved the sales and tech the headache of the their unknown knowledge repair territory of the 968.

Once I told him "im opting out".....with no hesitation ...."you can pickup ur car".

Please post the final cost from the shop you select, I'm guessing less than half.

There is a good shop in Anaheim, probably one of the best around. He is a little meticulous though, so you might pay a little extra for that.

lol - already pointed him there

That is shocking.

Suncoast Porsche in Sarasota charges $80 hour, for cars older than 2000 model year. Independents are $$110-120/hr.

The independents can play with the total hours, and cut your overall bill down from a dealer. The other 2 local dealers near me, do not do that $80/ rate, and you can tell because they have all new dars in service. Suncoast Porsche Motorsports does wholesale parts as well, for those of you on east coast.

Lots of enthisiasts on the west coast of florida, and they service them.

Which shop is that, Flash? Steve's on Lincoln? They did my PPI.

Outragous Repair costs? - flash - 10-03-2013

nope - don't take this wrong, but i'm pretty careful who i send there. i've told you about him. this guy is not cheap. he is very meticulous. he's old and cranky. but, he's really good, and he's fair. but, those who want to do things differently than he does, or want to scrimp and save, should not get anywhere near the place. he'll blow you out the door. he's also pretty politically opinionated, and is not bashful about it. that can put some people off.

i also gave him the name of a shop a bit north of him.

When I first got my car the list went like this

This is Labor

Replace Timing Best and Water Pump - 970.20

Replace Battery - 19.60

Replace Fuel Filter - 49.00

Service Diff & Transaxle Fluid - 78.40

Power Steering Service - 78.40

Replace Spark Plugs - 49.00

Brake Fluid Service - 78.40

Replace DME Relay - 19.60

Total 1342.60

Parts of course were extra.

It was a car that sat for 5 years and he took his time and treated both me and my car with the utmost respect. It was also work that I had no way of doing myself. I felt it was a fair price, although it would have been nice to be under a grand, but it was not unexpected.

The parts and labor out the door for the transaxle rebuild was $2700 cash - that was remove, tear down, rebuild and re-install. The local Porsche dealer as well as Brumo's would not even call me back!

It is what it is, if you feel you got a good deal then you did. It is great that every one here shares a "good shop" for everyone to work with. The guy that does my stuff is in Titusville, Pete's European.

This guy must be my mechanic's twin brother.

My 1993 968 Cabriolet Slate Metallic has been my weekend car for the past 10yrs and has never failed me. Still Starts and runs strong. Came in for a checkup to a local SOCAL Porsche dealer to inspect an coolant leak and power steering fluid leak. 2 days of a full inspection report.

Cost breakdown

Replace upper and lower hoses for power steering $775

Replace new radiator and hoses $1367

Replace motor mounts $1999

Rear Main Seal? $1670

Oil Pan re-seal $990

Control arm $1065

4 wheel alignment $299

Front sway bar bushing $294

I'm at crossroads. I might have to depart my beloved 968.

txn5060,

IMHO,, the only part of that job with a reasonable price is the alignment. You could do between 2 & 3 cars with new motormounts for $1,999. I recommend that you don't use aftermarket motor mounts. You don't want to do that job twice!
