Do you think the aftermarket will ever be able to justify providing replacement parts the factory no longer produces for a car with as little sales volume as the 968? Looks like 968 owners will have to get very creative with either finding parts from other cars that work on the 968, or building our own parts.

not sure. i think it depends on a number of things. for example, the threshold pieces are in more than just the 968, so there might be a market there for things like that.
then there are idiots like me who make stuff for a very small market anyway, just because they want something for their own car, and then make them for others.
only time will tell

Just think, someday my car might be worth more as a parts car for someone than it ever will be worth whole and running.
Maybe I should start taking bids on parts now?

the salvage yards have also caught up with this and most have jacked up the price of used 968 parts quite a bit - not as much as the "stealers" have, but don't expect bargains anymore.
i think the only part of a 911 to no longer be available is an intelligent and courteous owner. ba dum bum
Lmao. I can't wait for some 911 owner to make a less than favorable remark about the 968 - the comeback would be very straightforward : " - My wife thinks the VW bug is a really cute car, I never cared for them, but I must admit this new model you're driving is not as bad as I thought "

Funny - Not to get too sidetracked (but hopefully the nature of this thread allows for a bit of wandering), but Motor Trend just completed their second annual "World's best driver's car" comparison test, and again, the 911 (albeit a very high end version with a chest-clutching $151K price tag...) not only won, but utterly destroyed the competition by an insane margin, including cars like the Audi R8 and the Cayman S. Looks are a subjective thing (I like, but don't love, the 911's lines), but as a car, despite having the engine in the "wrong" place, the new 911 is a true engineering marvel.

while i can appreciate modern technology, and all that brings with it in terms of performance numbers, i find all cars today to be boring. i long for the raw experience of a stripped down sub 2000 lb sportscar. of course, then, when i am done driving that car through all the twisty canyon roads, i want to be comfortable again for the drive home.
hence the purchase of the 968. it may not be as small or light as i want, but it certainly still feels like a car, and not a video game

Well put, Flash, and I agree. But the interesting thing about Motor Trend's comparison test is that it isn't about the numbers - the 911, for example, finished mid pack in terms of lap time. Their primary criteria center around the quality of the communication between the road, car, and driver. I've never driven one, but according to the article, Porsche has really nailed this with the 911. Of course, this isn't going to convince those who don't like to car to go out and test drive one, I just find in interesting and that a car with a basic design that goes back 50 years can continue to perform so well.
To me, the epitome of the "car as video game" is the Nissan GTR - I'll have to see where it finished in the test.
