Just got my flywheel today, woot! Except it came one day too late and I had to rebook the shop date until the 18th <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/sad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />



My first impression is it's smaller than I expected (didn't quite know what to expect), and it's pretty heavy. Heh, of course this is "light" compared to the stock flywheel, so I'm glad I didn't need to lug around a 30lb DMF on the way home <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />



Anyone fancy a pizza? Toppings include: quality, performance, and genuine awesomeness! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

   



BTW: anything I should be aware of when with new clutches / flywheels? Break in periods etc?

just be very careful threading in the pressure plate bolts - criss cross pattern - a little at a time - torque exactly to spec - do not use a "click" type torque wrench



a clutch is really nothing more than a big brake pad - don't cook it on your first couple of engagements, and don't go banging the gears right away, but rather let it engage normally and smoothly for the first couple dozen engagements - that should be enough



it will take you that many times to learn the new feathering required and the downshift blipping anyway

Hmm, the only reason I ask is because it looks exactly like a Fidanza and not like the FW pictured on the rsbarn site.

the one in the shot above is indeed the rs barn flywheel - the shot up on the site was the authentic porsche motorsport flywheel - the web guy is slow to update and include the new unit



during development, it was determined that a single piece flywheel, for a number of reasons, was not going to work as well as a unit with a friction surface inset and pressed on gears, and since the motorsport unit made the same transaxle noise as the fidanza did, there was no reason not to go with the better design



an advantage over the fidanza (which i have) is that the heavier rs barn unit is pca approved for racing - it is available exclusively through rs barn at about a third the cost of a porsche motorsport unit, assuming you can find one

while i would hesitate to call it a replica (because it's a different design) i agree completely with the point being made



let's see - hmmmm - "i can buy one that works and is pca approved, or i can spend way more money on something else that doesn't work any better, and isn't pca approved, or i can spend a whopping ton of time and money tracking down and buying a real one, and then trying to prove that it's real to the steward"



yeah, not too tough of a call for me - definitely the way i will go on the race car

Just completed our first competition on the new flywheel - the reduction in mass is apparent when launching the car - need more revs and a bit more slip. Once you get used to the rev drop, the downshifts are really slick and sweet.



The resonance from the trans on coast down thru 2k rpm is quite noticeable esp since the car is stripped out - but not an issue in a race car <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Just got the car back with the new flywheel and clutch, WOOT! Man what a difference a new clutch and new hydraulics make! The clutch pedal is rock solid, and it engages almost at the bottom of the pedal (instead of the top heh). I haven't had a chance to really do anything with the car yet, but I can tell that there is more pick up in the revs. As for the noise, it's actually not quite as bad as I imagined it to be, but I can see how people might get the impression that there is something wrong or think the car is a "bucket-o-bolts" <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />



It's worse in low gears when coasting, especially down hill! I'm hoping to get record this stuff sometime this week so everyone can finally get a chance to hear it <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
