Better weigh those filters first, Bob.

lol - hoping it a trade off against the wire mesh

Carbon fiber mesh could save valuable ounces.

The wire mesh grills hold the filter material in, without it you would need another way to hold the filter in place. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

I am revising my position on air flow/air conditioning and this mod.

After a few more days in typical NC summer weather I fairly certain that I am getting less airflow in the cockpit. In past summers I could run the AC with the fan on its lowest setting (1) most of the time - once the interior had cooled down. Since the mod I seem to need to run the fan on 2 to remain comfortable.

Not sure if I will remove the filters. I was stunned to see Paul J's filters after a few months - black and green gunk that would have gone right into the interior, after gumming up the AC system. But the fan running at anything over 1 for a long period is quite noisy. I also assume it puts more stress on the fan system.

Bottom line: In the South air-conditioning is a serious business.

I'm driving in NJ today without functioning A/C - and it's seriously hot and uncomfortable. Hopefully I'll be able to get the repairs done sometime during the week - and I'll clean the KLA cabin filters.

my wife's 94' cab has them. I replaced them when we bought it. they looked/smelled nasty and were probably the orig set installed at the factory.

OEM units are $60/set , but they work with no noticable drop in volume of air delivered to the cabin. BTW - her a/c works fine in our 110F+ weather....a/c as good or better than the 928S we had, which had a much larger condensor.

Do our cars have a cabin A/C filter? - Anchorman - 06-18-2007

Mark, I must admit that my 60-mile drive this afternoon in 90+ degrees with the top down on the 968 was about as good as it gets - and the PT Cruiser with A-anything doesn't equal it.

I ended up replacing the plastic top bit of the fan thing with the later model which had place for the filters. Relatively simple, didn't seem too expensive. Though the filters are very expensive, need to find an alternative.

My 1994 coupe has pollen filters which periodically have to be changed out. When they become seriously clogged, the airconditioning system cycles on and off rather than running smoothly, making it ineffective. As I am somewhat allergic to the local tree pollen and the mildew that seems to plaque the Sycamore Maples where I live, I tend to change these every couple of years.

Do our cars have a cabin A/C filter? - Rude944 - 06-22-2007

As has been observed, the 1994 model year was the first build with the HEPA filter, in contrast to Bob's point, however, my 94, the 400th car to roll off the line, did also include the engine plastic.

really?

you have both the pollen filters AND the engine bay trim pieces (the one that covers the cruise control cables and power brake booster, and the one that goes around the airbox) - are the mounting points there for them?

Do our cars have a cabin A/C filter? - Rude944 - 06-22-2007

Hmm, alright... I have that halfway correct. I have the lower plastic trim and HEPA air filters. The top one is not there, and as far as the mounts are concerned, definately have the lower mounts, unsure about top.

This makes my car evermore rare! I should up the selling price

Puzzling! I would expect some funky stuff in the 944 series as they were made in Ingolstadt (sp?) but not on our Zuffenhausen cars.

Do our cars have a cabin A/C filter? - flash - 06-22-2007

that is odd - so, the body color metal brackets are there for the plastic that surrounds the airbox - the other mounts are just small studs that stick up from near the strut tower and a nut holds the shroud down

are you the original owner?

Just one word of caution on these air filters. A lot of the "goo" that is on them actually grows on them due to the buildup of dust. Individuals concerned about exposure to pollen, etc, should also be concerned about exposure to toxigenic mould that grows on the filters and is delivered directly into the air stream. I haven't these filters (mine are both 92s) but I would recommend that if you have them they ought to be replaced frequently - I would do them twice a year. Even in a garage, driven infrequently but if wet, stuff will grow on them. Those of you replacing them only every couple of years are likely breathing more and worse allergens than those of us without the filters.

A couple of years ago, when I first got my 968, I was really disappointed at the performance of the interior fan - even when turned up to the highest setting, it was still wheezy. Then I asked the guys on the 968uk forum what could be wrong. That's when I found out that my car had the pollen filters. The two in my car (one each side) were basically blocked up. As soon as I removed them, air came gushing out of the dashboard vents

So I ordered a couple of new ones from Porsche...at what I thought would be about $100 for both...turned out that was for EACH pollen filter!

Ended up returning them to Porsche and buying them from a car parts specialist for a quarter of the price.

Not the original owner.

Yes, the various holddown devices are existant and in body color.

I have an 1993 968, without the filters, just the mesh screen. I want to add the filters (custon mades ones) like many of you have. I'm just curious of the best way to get the mesh screen off and out? On the drivers side there is the fuse box to the side and the plastoc cover over it. Is there an easy way to access this area or will I need to remove the plastic top piece?

Thanks,
Randy
