changed the trans fluid today. Sound still there.
Unfortunately, it was like panning for silver ...many tiny little flakes in the bottom of the drain pan. Fluid otherwise looked OK.
Got a buddy down the street who works only on old Merc SL's (the real nice ones) and he is willing to let me use his shop lift for the "Trans"plant.
Saw a real nice red 928 on the back farm roads near my home.... must be nice to drive a Porsche......

the tiny flakes are probably the surface coating from the inside race of the pinion bearing...

I hope it's no more than that....

You could give it a try to change only the bearings of the differential.......
It can be done without a transplant. The bearings only cost about 150 dollars? Here in europe around 100 euros.

H Folks,
I was surprised to see this name on the thread: "The trans shop is AA TRANSAXLE 425-788-4070 Owner is Daryl"
He is known for excellent work for Syncros (my other fun car,
www.syncro.org), solving tough problems, and doing research and development on new ideas for trans.
http://www.aatransaxle.com/. Just check
http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/Syncro/ where he continually supports the people with help, ideas, and guidance. And when my trans self destructed on a trip last summer, he helped me by phone as well. He comes highly recommended.
Also, Xrad, the whirring-under-power is the exactly the symptom I had and the cause was the pinion bearing. Not sure about 968, but in the Syncro it is conical - quite dangerous, since wear introduces play, which puts tolerances on gears way loose, which then causes gear destruction.
The old ring and pinion noise question... -
SILVY968 - 04-05-2008
Correct, the gear is conical and when Daryl took mine out it was in pieces. I do not know what was holding it together, but if it would have come apart...well lets just say that it would not be pretty and would have cost me a whole lot more than I paid.

Thanks for the tips, guys!

I forgot. As a bonus when my trans went out, I took all the munched gears, glued them on a board and picture frame, and created a new wall decoration for the car corner in my garage (it is no garagemahal, more like Sanford and Sons front yard). But this is what the gears will look like if you don't fix a pinion bearing.

Just a buyer "beware" thing:
There is a 968 6 speed transaxle for sale on eBay...going for over 2200 right now with many days left. I bid on this same transaxle with the same year and same mileage and exact same picture 2 weeks ago. There is no mention that this is a 'representative" photo anywhere in the add or on their main website.
Reserve 2 weeks ago was not met. So i called the place ( big porsche recycler outside Atlanta) and made an offer.
Offer accepted by salseman AND i specifically stated that I wanted the transaxle in the eBay aution. He assured me that this is the one I would get and that they pulled the cover and the magnet was clean...yadada....
Anyway, I see MY transaxle is being reslisted with the same car year and same mileage...(1993 968 87,000 original miles)
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Porsche-968...sspagenameZWDVW
HMmmmmm....wonder which transaxle I bought and which one everyone else is bidding on....
Something to think about before dumping at least 2500$....strongly recommend anyone needing a transaxle to consider a rebuild(if you have the trans to do it and you can wait a little while ...my downfall) Email this guy. he was VERY helpful and emailed me a very detailed list of everything necessary within hours. He was the ONLY shop to send a detailed list of things to expect out of the 6 shops I requested this info from.

Xrad,
Just out of intrest, how many miles on your used gearbox? I bought one for €1000,- with 60.000 KM`s from a MY `94 968.
I even managed to sell my bad gearbox for €500,- so nett the swap just cost me €500,-.......by far not enough to do a rebuild.....

110,000 on original gearbox.......
On the used one I just bought..I have no idea how many miles because the recycler is just selling any transaxle and using the same add....

OK...just received the new old transaxle from a major parts dealer. Opened the crate to find that the transaxle in the ebay pic was not the one i received!
I expected this after seeing the relisting. ALSO, there is a small chunk of aluminum knocked off the rear transaxle mount. Either one of these is not really a problem...but I am disappionted that the seller did not at all mention that his photo was a 'representative' photo nor did he mention the tranny mount broken piece(see pic).
First thing I did after calling and discussing the findings was to remove the stub axles and pull the diff cover. He had stated it was very clean. WELL, he was absolutely right on this one. Trans fluid only slightly grey. I removed the magnet retaining clip and slid the magnet out so I could check the back. Most yards won;t go this extra step to clean anything.
Magnet had a little mud on the backside which I carefully removed and checked for metal with my supermagnet. NOTHING except microscopic minimal flakes (probably been there since the first day) Pinion felt tight and diff looked great. Ring and pinion still had original edge machining grooves and diff gear was smooth as glass. Input shaft bearing a hair loose. Case dirty. Shifter worked fine but need new plastic piece.
I will probably get the mount welded just to be safe. Probably does not have to be done though. In the future, any major purchase I make will need true photos and actual data. No more taking people's word on it.
I do have to say that they did a great job crating and shipping this item in a short time. Also, they offer a short warranty.
anyone know where to get the little right angle nylon bushing for the shift rod???[u]
ASLO: anyone have some quick tips on do's and don't of transaxle removal/install??[u]
I pushed out the old drive axle seals...only thing that looked bad. Got two from Paragon..little pricey at 37$ w/shipping. Saw a kaco? brand. did not look as well made as the Paragon one. Was going to do the diff bearings, but i did not feel like reshimming. old bearing have no scoring and turn freely so I will reuse them.

OK...transaxle together. I was able to borrow a two stage tranny jack and dropped this off at the garage tonight. The plan is saturday transaxle transplant.
Have all the tools and a lift and a few friends ready to help. There will be an Alfa guy, a mercedes guy, a Jaguar 'expert' and myself. We should be able to figure out this pretty easily. Problem is the kegerator in the corner of the shop......
I am having a new rubber trans mount expressed from Germany and hopefully it will arrive by Sat morning.
Anyway, if any of you have done this, send some tips my way! Will post pics......
Hey, 968synchro..I checked your other vehicle out...NICE

Today was the day. Brought tools and trans to friend's garage. It took 3 hours to change out trans. Not hard at all. New trans came with linkage so nothing to set up. Plug and play.
Tips:
1) turn crank to align driveshaft clamp bolts to tans axle ports. Slide to rear after loosening and using sharp chisel to spread clamp a little.
2) definately need trans jack and lift
3) use good tool for bolt removal. Stuf I listed in prior posts worked great.
4) don't tighten anything until all square (trans to torque tube, half shafts to trans, etc)
all in without problems. drove home and shifts great. only tiny whine (but I don't have carpets or sound deadening) No more grinding noise or 'ball bearing in a can' sounds!!
BUT, noticed a leak from rear transaxle plastic cover. Will have to replace. I decided to make an access port in the spare wheel well rather than removing trans again.
Putting my old trans on ebay......
extras: a few pics of the 300sl...we were not the first to have a slanted engine!
