Plating valve cover mounting bolts/washers

I've bought a complete replacement set for the bolts and washers (plus the grommets*) which secure the valve cover to the headblock. I can't stand the way the plating on those parts has failed. Tomorrow I'm going to a plating shop: I want to have them stripped and plated with something more durable and attractive. I"m thinking nickel: chrome doesn't do it for me.



Any thoughts on this? And: as an aside- the plater plans to mask off the threads so as to be sure they'll fit. This opens a possiblity for corrosion. Thoughts?





*in fact I have a valve cover and its gaskets on order, but that's another story...

How handy are you with a bench buffer?. A few minutes and you can have them looking like chrome. They stay polished too with a little car wax.

That's interesting. Is that your engine in photo? Is this a case of buffing the cadmium plating entirely off?

Yes, it is my car. I used a cotton buff wheel on a 6" bench grinder and some red compound. The plating comes completely off and you polish the steel to a bright finish. Wax it up and they do not rust. Use some heavy duty rubber mechanic type gloves as you have to polish the washers separately and holding them is tricky.

The strut tower brace and mounting plates are painted with SEM Trim Black. It can be found at automotive paint stores in rattle cans. Duplicolor also has a Trim Black that is comparable. That is a little easier to find in autoparts stores.

Greimann, is that sarcasm that I detect in your response? Hopefully, I am misinterpeting it, and it is, in fact, jovial. For the record, my statement "I think you may be right" was completely jovial and lighthearted. Also, I said nothing regarding the technological aspects of your valve cover.

For my taste - since my car is black - I'm imagining the awesome look of the valve cover and vanity cover powdercoated black. Dave, you've made me add something new to my list, and just when I thought I was starting to see daylight.

Yes, your engine looks tops.

Can you show us a wider angle shot of the whole engine bay?

Is that red a powder-coat? If not, how?

And how did you do the lettering too (Porsche & VarioCam)?

Look several posts up. there is a wider angle of the entire bay. Someday I'll figure out how to repost an attachement that has already been posted.



The VarioCam logo was first painted white inside the letters with a paint pen. Then, after the white is dry, you sand the top with some fine paper and a flat block to define the edges of the letters. Clearcoat the whole thing to gloss it back up.



The powdercoaring was done by a previous owner, but I imagine the process was that the cover was coated red first, then the area around the Porsche lettering was carefully masked and the black was laid in.

I did mine by painting it in and wiping away the excess with a straight folded lint-free rag dampened with some thinner on it. You get very crisp lines and the thinner doesn't harm the aluminum or powdercoat finish. I imagine that's how they did it. Masking tape is near impossible unless you lay one large piece over it and cut out the letters with a delicate blade, but still very hard.
