how can I keep my photos under 500k for downloads ?

Most of the digital editing software today has image resizing tools. My guess you are using Windows OS and the default Office Picture Manager

Once you open up the image, just go to pulldown menu Picture>resize and there are some pre-determined sizes that will show the file size once completed.

Then save it as a different name in case you want to keep the original
