Passenger side airbag removal
#21

There are actually two bags together in a single airbag assembly. Picture two shows the two bags with blue arrows pointing to each of the connectors that you remove from the bags. You need one resistor in each of the two connectors.

As an aside to this whole resistor thing, if by chance you do get in a frontal collision that should deploy the bags, be sure to check the resistors as they are most likely blown. The system probably pumps a lot of current through the circuit to ignite the bags and a small 1/2 watt resistor won't be able to take it. One extra thing on the "to do" list after a major punch!

[quote name='flash' date='Oct 14 2005, 08:10 AM']oof - reminds me of a rental car (reliant i think) that blew a driver airbag when i hit a rut - made me veer off the road and wreck the car - not exactly what they had planned (or me for that matter)

looking forward to seeing pics of the empty space and the airbag

no resistor?  no airbag light then?  did the 944 have an airbag light?

The 944's all have the same ACTUNG light and it will go off if you open the electrical loop, just like on the 968. Simply following my wiring procedure allows you to actually remove the entire airbag system, including computer and triggers. No light, no resistor.

Thanks to bibbetson for the writeup & pics. Nice work. Is there a procedure for the driver's side? I'm switching to a CS-type wheel, so I need to jettison the driver's side bag, too.

Surf the DIY section. There are a couple of posts on the 930S wheel.

[quote name='flash' date='Oct 14 2005, 11:48 AM']i see you used multiple resistors - can you elaborate on that a bit?  i have already disabled the driver bag and have a resistor there

yes, dimensions please - i have something i want ot put in there and want to make sure it fits first

The airbag is 12" W x 5 1/2" H x 4" D. Those are the dimensions of the bag assembly within the mounting bracket (area of the bag assembly itself). It has an odd shape on the front to account for the curve of the dash.

This is what the dash looks like looking from under it with the airbag removed. You can see the airbag mounting bracket in gold.

Front of the airbag.

If you take out the airbag and then add the resistors later will the computer reset itself? Or will it need to be reset by the dealer?

The resistor trick will not reset the warning light. It will only prevent it from tripping in the first place. So far the only way known is to have someone (service tech) with a diagnostic device reset the airbag computer.

I yanked out my passenger side airbag today. The battery has been disconnected for over two days, and I did the 3 ohm resistor trick about five years ago, so hopefully I won't have any problems with the warning light. What a pain! And I had the seat out, giving myself maximum access. Allow at least two hours for this job if you're planning to do it, because the four 5 mm allen head bolts are pretty hard to get to, often requiring moving at an eighth of a turn at a time. Plus, they're in very tight - they appear to have some sort of thread locker on them. Removing the ~3" diameter plastic HVAC hose that runs behind the airbag is a must to get access to the bolts. Overall, the job is comparable to changing the clutch high pressure line, but seems worse, because I was prepared for the clutch line to be a horrible job, and I found it to not be that bad, whereas I somehow got the impression that the airbag removal was relatively easy. All a matter of expectations, I guess...

I tried removing the driver side air bag. Got it off the wheel (easy) but I can't seem to

remove it from the cover. I wanted to keep the original steering wheel. Any help?

Thanks
