Passenger Air Bag Delete

Ok so new thought - could I wire a passenger airbag disarming switch...I have a blank and figure I could use something like a rear window switch (On/Off). The question is would it be just running a separate loop with the 3 Ohm resistors. Thought is it would be nice to have a defete switch like new cars (would always be off in my case - save the dash...) but also try to avoid the insurance quandary of deleting the airbag all together...



Also wondering if the older style airbag would be ok with the power being switched on and off - wouldn't want to set it off by making it active again or setting off the airbag light....





Any thoughts?

that's pretty dicey. those things hold a charge. i think you would have to be careful about when you turn it on and off, leaving enough time to discharge before turning on the power.



if legality is a problem, unless you retained the OEM seat belts, you'll have a bigger issue with insurance about the harnesses, as they are not DOT approved for street use. every insurance company i know has a bug up their butt about that one.

As a site owner I feel it is my responsibility to recommend that no one ever deactivates any of the manufacturers safety equipment by themselves. There are appropriate forms that must be filed with The Department of Transportation NHTSA, and state/local authorities.



If I'm your passenger, please make sure all safety is equipment ON!



Nothing personal, but I trust Porsche more than I trust YOU to save my life.

Jay - no worries that is why I was thinking about a switch - 80% of the time its just me so the only thing the passenger airbag would do is blow up my dash - though I'm not sure if a 20 year old airbag is going help or cause more injuries. guess it would depend on the impact...but if by activating the swicth it would set it off too that would defeat the plan.



As a side thought does anyone know if you can upgrade the airbags to something newer - does Porsche sell a newer replacement? Of course if it cost more than a new dash that would not be cost effective...

My odometer quit working recently. My local mechanic (no Porsche dealer anywhere near) took out the instrument panel and sent it to Hollywood Speedo to be repaired. We got it back, installed it and indeed the odometer now does work fine. BUT, now when we start the engine the airbag light blinks once and then stays on, and the big red 'central warning light' likewise stays on. Any ideas? Would the (temporary) removal of the instrument panel have some effect on the airbag circuitry?

if you pulled the steering wheel to get the cluster out, and did not disconnect the battery first, and waited at least an hour before starting the job, you have found your problem. you will need a bosch hammer or a durametric to reset the light.

No we did not pull the steering wheel to get the cluster out. (Was difficult, but finally managed to get enough 'give' in the top of the panel to remove the cluster.) BUT, we did start up and drive the car with the cluster removed (as we had to move the car from the garage where we worked on it). Could that have tripped a one-way circuit, so that the air bag light stays on until it is re-set in some way? (We tried disconnecting the battery, of course, but that had no effect; the air bag light came on again when we re-connected).



Thanks much for any info on this, as I am about 170 miles from the nearest Porsche dealer. And I DON"T like driving with that huge central warning light staring me in the face.

yup - that'll do it. found that one out the hard way myself 10 years ago



there may be somebody in your neck of the woods with a durametric. many shops have a bosch hammer, not just dealers. call around.

I bet Cloud968 has one of the required tools. It would be a heck of a drive to Austin but Cloud has torn his car apart and put it back together again, so he could give it a good once over.

Ok, thanks guys. After reading some of the previous posts I suspected that this might be the case on the air bag light.. Should have read the posts prior to the work, though I don't know what otherwise we might have done with the car while the odometer was being repaired. Anyway, it might be possible to find a shop with this bosch 'hammer' or durametric (whatever that is) in Abilene, which is relatively close (about 45 miles). Would a Honda dealer be likely to have one? Toyota?

you would have had to let the car sit in order to avoid the issue



a durametric is an aftermarket system that gives you access to the ECU to read and reset codes, as well as monitor certain engine functions. a search here (always use the advanced search) will turn up more info on that.



some porsche shops would have a hammer. it's expensive though, so it won't be terribly common. i don't know that it is used on any other make
