Outside Air Temp Gauge
#1

I'm looking for a good operational outside air temp gauge for my '94 968. Anybody got an extra spare or a leftover one from a wreck?

Mine hasn't worked either - just was very dim all the time...I know you can find a clock that I think will fit (not sure - from a 944) on e-bay every once in awhile.

I did try to order a new one (Part #944-641-223-00-01C) - About $200 from Pelican and the same from Auto Atlanta - but after making the order at each place got calls back later saying, sorry, No Longer Available. So it seems like new ones are kinda tough to find.

I did finally find a used one at 20th Street Auto (dismantlers in Phoenix).

Nice guys, arrived fast, in the end only celsius works (not fahrenheit) - but hey better than before!

(Be careful when you pop out the emergency flasher button - if you have not done it before [like me] you don't realize how fragile the little plastic brackets are on the dash piece, and then you break them, and then you get to order a new dash piece too...lesson learned! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/mellow.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> )

Flash,

The outside air temp gauge is no longer available from Porsche, otherwise I would have already bought one new.

hmmm - i'll have to look into that then - i continue to find things no longer available from the dealer, but do usually manage to find them new elsewhere - not sure what that is about

Pull the unit out and check all the solder points. When I pulled mine out I found one of the solder points broken. The unit was dim and only display certain parts of the characters when I pulled it.

What disassembly is required to remove it? I tried at one point but gave up out of fear of breaking something since I didn't have a guide.

Just some patience as one person noted, you don't want to break the clips on the hazard switch. From what I can remember I removed the bezel from the front and the temp display itself is also clipped into the dash the like the hazard switch.

My temp gauge was actually screwed on. Interesting about the solder points - hadn't thought of that - maybe that is what was wrong with mine too!

I think I found the write up on the removal from Clarks Garage - but see today the site is no longer available - that sucks...lot of good info was there!

This is good too:

Now that you mention I think I do recall some small screws holding it. Hopefully clarks is just temporary, it appears he forgot to renew his domain name.

It was renewed a few hours ago but I guess it will be tomorrow before the servers are updated.

The outside air gauge is easy to remove since it is screwed in. Disassembleing the unit itself requires prying the front plastic panel retaining tangs out of slots in the side of the case. There are no solder point problems in mine, it just plain crapped out and won't work period!! This thing is the strangest instrument I have ever seen, and I can't figure out how it operates. It has a device mounted on a circuit board that presses against a flat sheet of what looks like white mylar that in turn has an orange colored lens over it. It is beyond me as to how that single electrical point that touches the white mylar can generate numbers on the screen (normal LED or liquid crystal type instruments have individual wires going to each LED that forms a number or on the liquid crystal numbers formed on the screen, but not this instrument!!) I finally gave up trying to fix it after playing around with all of the internal parts in it without any success.
