Splitter
#1

I saw on here somewhere before that somebody was selling or had access to front splitters. My black liner that sits under the front bumber has been missing since I bought the car and I would like to replace it with something. Can anyone help?

regardless of whether or not you get the splitter, you should run that piece - it helps direct the air to the radiator and maintain a positive pressure zone in front of it, thereby maximizing cooling - it also prevents foreign objects from getting up in there

to answer the question though, gert at carnewel in belgium is the source

Many of the Porsche bone yards that have 968's can supply this piece.

I got mine that way. Expect to pay $50- $250 depending on the mood of the seller. Ask for the mounting hardware, it makes it way easier that hunting down the correct bolts etc.

i'd be interested to hear the trail that led you to belgium to find a front splitter! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

i figured someone did and internet search and found it.

is he a friend of a friend or something like that?

do you remember how much it cost or have any sketches of what the actual part looks like? i'm unsure whether it's a new belly pan altogether or just an add-on to what's already there?

sorry to be a pest, just curious....

lol - nope - nothing that involved

i think it was eric that pointed me to him originally - he had organized a group buy some time ago - i just did the same thing in response to somebody else who was buying and selling them for profit - since i wanted one, i decided to cut out the middle man and make them available to others at a discount at the same time

as i remember, it was $350 EU for one, and less for more - single shipping to me was $50, and shipping 6 was $60 total - the exchange rate will seriously affect the final price, so pay attention there - it went up and down a few times while i was waiting for them, and consequently my costs changed a bit, in the wrong direction, between the time i gort everybody's money, and the time my card got charged - i lost about $100 over the 6 units in the process - oh well - just a heads up in case anybody decides to set up another group buy

to be cleaer, the splitter is to be installed IN ADDITION to the lower apron, not as a replacement - the lower apron, as well as the rear belly pan, is there to optimize airflow, and should not be deleted - the splitter installs sandwiched between the bumper cover and the lower apron, using the same bunch of screw locations as the lower apron

hope that helps

Dang, that splitter sure used to look clean. That picture is from 2000 and that exact splitter is still going strong. It did three years of use on the street and a couple on the race car. Over 100+ days on the track and it is still in good shape. The paint aint like it used to be, but these can take some abuse.

thanks everyone for the picture and the description.

sounds like something for next christmas to me. unless i hit the lotto or manage to sell my first born! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

is there a function to the splitter, or just cosmetic?

i'm going to take a guess and say that at high speeds, it directs more air up into the lower grille to help keep the oil radiator and lower engine cooler.

one last question: did you guys have to paint them yourselves or does he paint them for you and send them out?

In high speed driving, a splitter can function to split the air into two discinct streams above and below the car. It helps manage airflow, but for street cars it is mostly cosmetic.

They come primed and you have to paint them. When you do, make sure to use a flexitive additive in the paint so it doesn't crack when you hit things. And you will hit things.

brian - yes, it does help direct more air up to the radiator and oil cooler - i noticed a, while not huge, very distinct drop in operating and underhood temps after installing the splitter - there is also a bit more front end bite at higher speeds (80 plus) - i haven't had it up over 120 since installing it, so i can't say how effective it is at very high speeds, but it was definitely more planted at that speed than before
