Oil consumption for track car

My turbo is Nicasil as were the factory 968 turbos. Firehawk is a Michael Mount design dry sleve that has worked in 8500 rpm motors for 10 years. Neither use total seal brand rings but some MM Nascar stuff. He's pretty quiet about things like that.

On stock 968's ,the alusil bore which is kind of flexible and combined with chrome faced rings do not have the best seal at high rpm. Keeping gas vapors out can cut oil consumption. There will still be a fair amount though

I check the oil level prior to each time I go onto the track and have noted that it goes from full to 3/4 after the first session (about 20 minutes), then I fill it up and it stays full for the rest of the sessions. I'd guess that the engine does not consume oil when it is warm after 20 minutes of all-out driving, but I'm no expert on the subject.

I typically burn almost a quart during a DE weekend (eight 25 minute sessions).

all engines burn oil. they have to. the oil rings never scrape it all off. there is always something left. it can be pretty minute though. just how much depends on the ring design, cylinder material, chamber efficiency, and mixture. typically engines that burn a little bit tend to last longer than ones that don't, due to friction, though they make a bit less power due to chamber pressure loss. it's only a couple of percent, but that can mean the difference between winning and losing. also typically engines that run fatter mixtures tend to cause more oil burning due to dilution of the oil. they get more power from the mix, but at the expense of longevity (defined by maintaining the level of output over a period).



but then that's why everybody freshens up their motor every season too.

I burn a half quart per day doing DE's, 5 to 6 20 minute sessions. I have a SC unit and even though faster track times, no increased burn rate. I don't see any detectable loss with normal driving. Oil changes at 3000 miles.

You might try Motul. It is IMO the best oil on the market. It holds up extremely well under load.
