OBD I to OBD II Conversion Cable(s)
#1

I'm just curious if anyone has combined these two cables to get, effectively, an OBD I -> OBD II -> USB conversion, and what kind of software would work with it afterwards? Looks like they're providing a shady link to an old copy of Durametric?

this kind of thing pops up from time to time. from what people have said, it doesn't appear to work for us.

Those are the two cables that come with the Pro version of Durametric, so I guess the answer to your question is "yes", that works to get a OBD I to USB connection. Not sure if a generic piece of Scan software would work or not. I've never tried a generic program with my Durametric cables.

I downloaded the file that comes with the cable, and it actually includes a version of Durametric software.

Both cables are less than $60 total (not counting shipping), so it's an interesting toy / side project. I don't really *need* it, but it would be fun to see "what's going on in there".

Interesting response from one of the sellers of these products on eBay. They claim to support a few OBD I cars, and claim they have tested 40 other software products, but I don't know the veracity of any of this.

Hi,

Unfortunately for your specific mentioned car, only a hardware handheld scanner is going to work. Software won't. That includes ours, nor anyone else's. Reason is because your car is OBD1. It doesn't comply with OBD2 standards. See more info here (for your country): http://www.totalcardiagnostics.com/suppo...id=4&nav=0

Does anyone have the diagram of the conversion cable? So from the 19 pin to ODB2 to fit it to a PIWIS cable?

I also found that pin out on the forum indeed. But i just have the standard ODB2 pin out, i think for an adapter to the Porsche PIWIS cable, not all ODB2 features have to be connected, and some vendor specific pins should be connected.

The 2 diagrams i posted are not that different. I see i made a mistake in my post (1->13 should not be in the second diagram), here i put the 2 diagrams ordered by ODB2 pin (Looking at ODB2 and the meaning of the 19 pins the second one seems the right one) :

OBD2-> Porsche 19 Pin

1 -> 13

4+5 -> 10

7 -> 8

9 -> 14

11 -> 19

15 -> 7

16 -> 12

OBD2-> Porsche 19 Pin

10 -> 15

15 -> 7

16 -> 13

Ok just got it working. I was able to read and reset codes in my 968

I ordered the PIWIS cable from http://www.ecutool.c...Cable_1677.html

The software can also be downloaded on that page.

Then I ordered an adapter and took it apart, and created a cable like this.

OBD2-> Porsche 19 Pin

1 -> 13

4+5 -> 10

7 -> 8

9 -> 14

11 -> 19

15 -> 7

16 -> 12

Yes i can read and reset codes. My 968 had problems with the variocam before and code 35 was still in the fault memory. So i just reset the code, the fault code memory is now empty, see if code 35 comes up again. I don't expect this, because the variocam kicks in very obviously..<img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

I still have to look into the software some more, i did not find anything yet for logging data. If i have more info i will post it...

I have some images of the adapter i made, but i can only add images that are on the internet somewhere. Have no idea how i can add images to my gallery so i can link them in theses posts.

The adapter cable was just a china made one from ebay. I took it apart, the inside was filled with soft plastic which i had to cut away to get to the cable connections. Then i just soldered them like in the diagram. The PIWIS cable needs no adjustments and also works in my 996.

no worries. i was just trying to see where it stacked up against the durametric. i have found the logging capabilities to be very helpful, but most people probably only need to be able to read and reset codes.

Actually the software you can download from the website is Durametric version 3, that version did not need the license chip in the durametric cable yet. Do you have an original Durametric adapter? If so could you check the connection diagram between the Porsche 19 pin and the OBD2 female. Then i can check if i actually have all the right wires connected.

I guess the adapter cable is the same, it is just some pins connected from one side to the other. There is nog chip in this cable, just in the PIWIS cable itself.

I added some pictures to the gallery:

Well done. So, you took apart and re-pinned the round-pin to OBD cable. I guess I have some (more) work to do.

It could be the cable of sensolutions just works. The 9 and 11 pin on odb2 dont have to be connected for durametric to work with the piwis cable of ecutool.

The standard durametric 3 is provided. When i select 968 i do not have any data logging possibilities. Still have to check with the 996, but i guess data logging will also not be available.
