I came home from a short trip last weekend and upon pulling into my driveway I started to hear a rattle. It was what I thought to be and sounded just like a lose heat shield on the cat. You know the sound. So I took it to my Porsche guy to do tack weld the shield. I thought. I was sure that was the issue. We got it up in the air and the sound is coming from in the bell housing near the starter. Now under a load is when it sounds off but .....put drive it and the sound goes away and she preforms no differently than she ever did. It will be a day or two before he can get to it so Any advise?????
Thanks
Ross

It's a Tipronic and when I am at a stand still and drop it into gear she will rattle. As I accelerate the noise goes away. Like what ever is making the noise is pined from the tork of the drive train. Would a motor mount behave like that? Would I hear it near the starter? I know I was told of a possible mount issue when the car was PPI'd last may when I bought it.
Thanks

I have had a similar noise. It turned out to be a bad constant velocity joint at the tipside.
Changed and it was gone.
If the sound as you described is coming from the bell house than you might check the damperplate.....
Gives the same noise perhaps. But cost $$$$ ouch!.

[quote name='RS Barn' post='60883' date='Sep 30 2008, 08:36 PM']Rattle at idle could be motor mounts.
Knocky sound and vibration at idle and particularly in gear vs neutral leans toward flywheel damper in Tip

Well Pete you were right. It is the
flywheel damper. The whole center is gone. He can't believe I was still driving it. He is tellng me 12 weeks to get the part. Any suggestions. He said it is a flawed part and should have been upgraded.............
Thanks

Ross,
This was done in my car by the previous owner, I have the receipt.
The part listed is "Buffer plate 50 list": $900.00. (Not sure what the "50 list" means.) No indication where the repair facility got the part.
The labor item is "Remove Automatic Transmission and Drive Shaft, Replace Rubber buffer plate at engine": $1,530.00.
There are other parts listed for the job: trans fluid, exhaust gaskets, rear main oil seal, pilot bearing (?). He had the rear main seal done at the same time, which is probably a very good idea once somebody is in there.
Sunset is
http://www.sunsetimports.com, the dealer in Portland, OR. They send Porsche parts at 15% above their cost with no sales tax (if I got it right), which is way less than local dealers. The Porsche parts specialist "Jeff" is the one who helped me with lots of parts in the past.

Well I found two.............$1056.00 is the best price I got. When I spoke to Sunset the parts guy Jeff? said he knew of one in Texas and that one was not for sale. I called anyway cause come to find out that was the dealership where my Cab was bought. Weird huh? The owner of the dealership is saving it for his wifes car. I did try Pelican they have always been helpful with parts for my other car. He said he had one for about $1200.00 bucks. If anyone else needs one call me .866-426-4148 I've done the leg work for you. I was thinking of milling some of these guys from an aluminum billit............any interest?
Thanks again for you support. I was a bit frazzled trying to figure a way out of this. I have fears that I've bought a money pit.

The parts guy at Sunset suggested making a solid one. When I questioned him about the vibration he said it really wouldn't be all that bad. I wondered if the wear came from me using the manual mode 99% of the time. He said absolutely not.
where did the 10 year replacement number come from? What other major time frame parts am I going to deal with?
