Hi folks. I'm here because I'm investigating buying a 1996 968. I have two 944s (among a few other Porsches) and I've really enjoyed them. I've been quite eager to sample the evolutionary model that comes far behind it to see how it improved over the years. The one I'm looking at has 178k miles, which is a bit high, so I'm here hoping to be able to figure out whether I'm in for a treat or a nightmare. I generally love working on my own cars until I'm out of my depth. I just did belts/rollers/seals on my 1986 944 so I can wrench a bit at this point. I've rebuilt calipers and updated the suspension. Interior electrics have the better of me most days, though. Hoping to learn a bunch from all of your experience. Thanks!

At 178k miles it's all about the maintenance. If it has been correctly maintained you should be able enjoy the 968 right out of the box. If not, you are in for some headaches. Belts/rollers and all rubber parts wear dependant on both use and age...I would definitely think about items like cam chains and pads, rod bearings, etc., and a  lot of while you're in there parts.

Good luck,

Jay
