"new" 968 red coupe in the garage.
#1

hi just leaving a note that i have been an old 993 owner for a few years, but picked up a 968 last week for what i thought was a good price. (divorce situation) it is a red 1993 coupe with black leather. midwest eurosport here in the area looked at it and thought it was decent.

looking forward to accessing the site! curt chicago, il

Welcome, and I hope you mean it was someone's divorce that precipitated the sale and not that your divorce precipitated the purchase. [Image: biggrin.gif]

Wait a minute. If you got divorced and ended up with your or a 968 how bad could it be!

congrats !

on a related note as I've always said, I CAN afford a DB9 in addition to my 968, but CAN'T afford the divorce that would come as a result of it.. so if these are the spoils of of an otherwise challenging time, well.. c'est la vie !

also reminds me of one of my favorite personalized plates ever, on a 911, driven by a woman : "was his"

Just proves divorce isn't always a bad thing. Mine cost me an '80 Volvo wagon. Not a bad trade!

Ha! No, sorry for the confusion; the seller was getting a divorce and therefore they were selling car to me! I used to have a 84 944 way back in 1989 and missed the balance vs. 911, and this 968 is light years ahead of my old 944. Even though i have been a 911 guy with my 993 for so long, it was interesting to read that the designer of the 993, Harm Lagaay was also the designer of the 968. No wonder they are both beautiful machines.

there are a few oil leaks up front in the 968 though...roughly how much is reasonable to do the timing belt, water pump, front oil leaks?

I asked my regular shop when I was in the other week about getting a quote on doing the timing belts and water pump on my 968. The estimate came in at $1700. This included all the parts and 9.5 hrs (IIRC) of labor @ $95/hr.

I don't know if this is considered reasonable for this job or how it lines up to the book time for the job but I thought I'd throw it out there as a data point.

Even though I got the estimate my plan is to pickup Flash's DIY when it's ready and do the job myself.

Welcome to the Forum!

Just got a quote yesterday for the water pump, timing and balancer belts plus thermostat replacement, for $1375 with remanufactured WP and $1740 with new WP. They said it would be ~7 hours @ $100 / hour.

Seals (if necessary) would be extra. That pricing also does not include the tensioner and idler pulleys (which he recommends I do also).

If you have the space, the tools, and the time (i.e. if the 968 isn't a daily driver), you might want to consider doing the job yourself. It's pretty time consuming, but it isn't all that difficult. And some very knowledgeable people on this site are in the process of putting together a very detailed and definitive DIY on the job (it may be done already; I haven't checked). The parts are relatively cheap, but the labor cost is astronomical, as you've seen, simply because there are a lot of things that have to come off do do the job. But there aren't any real critical alignments or tolerances, so it's a pretty low-skill job (hey, if I can do it, anybody can [Image: biggrin.gif])

Congrats on the car; 968s are wonderful, rare, and highly desirable cars. Welcome to the forum!

Welcome. I hope some day to find a good divorce so I can pick up a 993 to add to my 968. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
