Hello! Considering a 968 instead of my 914
#1

Hello! I'm in Marietta, Georgia and thinking that I might like a 968. I have a 1974 914 2.0 now, and it is a lot of fun, but traffic here is kind of crazy. So I tend to only drive it on weekends.
Once I can view some of the other areas on this forum I'm hoping to learn some of the ins and outs before beginning my search for a 968 "in earnest" as they say.

Best Regards,
Ken

Hi Ken,

I had two 914's and a 928 before I bought my 968. Both my 914's just did not have the power or comfort I wanted to go from point A to B. Loved the handling, didn't love not having AC and other creature comforts. The 968's is simply a more modern car, the AC cools very well and the car is alot more comfortable as a daily driver....alot quicker and does much better with Interstate/highway driving. Good luck with your decision!

New that car would go fast! It was listed at 21k on the PCA mart a couple of months ago.

If you want to try a 968 out drop me a line...

Ken,

You might take a look at the 968 with a Tiptronic. Very nice auto transmission, and I am happy with mine that way, especially with traffic. It has 5 different shift maps so the driver can get it into increasingly more aggressive sport shifting modes. Of course not as much fun in the twisties. Matter of fact that 968 for sale near you is same as mine except the trans; silver exterior with grey interior is a very nice color combination.

having one of each, i can also testify that the tip is a nice setup - no, it's not as fun at the limits as the 6-speed, but i find it a pleasure to drive every time i get in it - also, just being able to stand on it, have it kick down and take off, is quite a satisfying sensation, and actually more of a seats of the pants rush than manually downshifting to accelerate - the removal of the shifting procedure makes you more aware of the acceleration

of course you can still manually shift

I had not considered the tiptronics. My wife has a 2001 Passat with tip, its OK. I've test driven one 968 coupe with 6 speed and two 944 S2 cabriolets with 5 speeds and they all were pretty easy to drive. They also all had almost 200K miles and lots of interior wear. But they felt like the engines still had lots of life. Looking for less miles and better condition.

My issue with the traffic is not so much the shifting but there is so much weaving around while the drivers smoke with one hand and text on the mobile while watching DVD's and GPS navigation and... I think they don't see my 914 even though its bright yellow.

I've got some business travel coming up that will suck up time and need to sell the 914 first (after some discussions with the wife its in my best interest ), so I'm not ready to buy just yet.

Thanks again for all the good input.
