Name that part?
#1

I have a cable in the engine bay that literally fell apart in my hands. I had to use electrical tape to hold it together. The problem is that I do not know what the heck it is...does anyone know what this cable is? Thanks!

I believe that is the Hall sensor or sender.

yup - hall sender - very common failure due to heat from the exhaust - that's one of the reasons why i created the heat shield

That looks like it would be a hard to find part and maybe hard to replace. It may be a little late for the heat shield as most of the damage has been done for some years now.

not too bad - you have to remove the valve cover to get to it, but then it's pretty easy

as for the heat shield, the problems will still exist, and the other things that are subject to the heat would still be protected (heater control valve, power steering reservoir, etc) and the under hood temps would drop, which means more power

Might want to put a piece of tape over the hole in your distributor while your at it. There's a plug that falls out very easily.

my hall sensor crumbled, it was epoxied back in, holds fine for now.

What does the hall sensor do anyway?

it tells the ECU where the cam is relative to the crank - without it the car can run very oddly, miss at high rpms, and generally feel lackluster

Thanks everyone for the help on this! Any idea where you can get this part and the plug for the distributor?

oh yeah - i'm already back at it and working on new stuff - i keep finding parts out there that i think are too expensive, so i am going to make ones that are less expensive (basically eliminating the profit portion and putting them out there for just above what they cost, and not what the market will bear, leaving only enough margin to keep the R&D costs taken care of)

It's common for the hall sender casings to crack, but, while this is a but unaesthetic, it doesn't necessarily mean the sender needs to be replaced. My casing crumbled several years ago, so I wrapped it with electrical tape, secured it with a few zip ties, and installed Flash's heat shield, and I haven't had any problems with it.

Years ago, before my casing crumbled, a few people got together for a group buy on these things, for a very low price - somewhere between $20 and $50, iirc. I wish I had participated. Unfortunately, I can't remember who offered the group buy, but if anyone can remember, maybe we could put another one together.

I'm the same as Cloud. Did my engine refresh and the connector crumbled. So far all is fine with 3M magic <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Did you install the heat shield? I'd highly recommend it <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I have had a heat shield since the release but mine still had 14 years of HOT application, was inevitable.

Yes, but I would think the heat shield should protect the sender from further deterioration. At least that's what I'm counting on.
