Mystery grime inside rim
#1

Last time I washed my car, I noticed some heavy "grime" on the inner third of the driver side rear rim (closest to the centerline of the car). It is so heavy, I couldn't clean it off with the wheel on the car. It was sort of just smearing around, so I assume it is grease, brake fluid, oil or something similar. The rim on the other side of the car was clean. I had the half-shaft replaced on that side about a year ago, with not many miles or washings since. Any idea what might be leaking onto the inside of the rim cylinder? Might it be related to the repair?

It's more than likely molybdenum grease from a split or incorrectly fastened CV boot. ie maybe the people who replaced your half-shaft didn't quite do everything up correctly.

Would I be able to see that from underneath the car? Is it a rubber seal of some sort?

You should be able to check around the boot of the shaft or mating surfaces for excess grease. if it looks ok, it's most likely left over from the failed part you had replaced.

Without lifting the rear end, I was able to see discoloration around the boot. I'm going to take the car back to the shop that replaced the half-shaft. When I talked to them on the phone, he said that they may have put more grease (or whatever is in there) than needed and it oozed out when it heated up. They're going to get it up in the air and inspect. I'll update this thread when I get the car back.

While it's in the shop, I'm going to get my tie rods replaced and lower suspension brace installed, so I have that to look forward to...

The mechanic that installed the half-shaft on that side inspected it and the boot was fine. So, it likely was just some excess grease that oozed out.
