mystery brackets
#1

I pulled my exhaust tip to have it chromed (no bling-bling jokes please), and noticed these two brackets hanging under the rear bumper. What are they for and/or what is not hanging from them?

they are installed backwards, and are supposed to connect to the bumper cover

seems that the rear bumper cover has been removed at some point

My car is a '92. The tip was painted stainless. With a little emory cloth, light oil, elbow grease, and metal polish (not to mention a couple of hours) my exhaust tip looks like chrome. What year is your car?

It also appears your car is one of those without a mount for the rear tow hook.

Those might be a part of option code 1177, It was a very rare option to hang the previous owner from.

Your car could have had a mishap that shoved the flexible bumber in at the bottom. The PO could have removed the screws to the bracket in order for the bumper to come back to shape.

Thats my guess.

mine too - then they just reinstalled them backwards

easy enough to fix though

I removed the black paint from the exhaust tip and bracket hardware yesterday with some paint stripper and SOS pads. It is stainless steel, and it does look pretty good, but not nearly as bright as chrome. My chrome guy doesn't do SS so it looks like I have more polishing to do.

Guess I have another repair project due to some previous incompetence. This and some "slight" misrepresentations about the paint condition when I flew to buy the car does encourage me to exercise option 1177 and hang the owner under the rear bumper for my next cross-country drive.

Thanks for the collective knowledge.

Tom,

If you are not satisfied with the shine, then you need to work the stainless a bit more. Take a close look at the picture of my car. I polished the exhaust tip 2+ years ago.

There is a product called ROLITE. It is made for polishing SS. It is amongst the best in the market.

Thanks, guys. I'm having rotator cuff surgery tomorrow which will limit my available "elbow grease" for quite a while, so I will just drop it off with a metal polisher that I have used before. About $45 to get a mirror finish inside and outside.

Just looked at the bumper brackets on my car and yours are not backward, just bent.

I think this might be related to another little body work thing that bugs me everytime I look at it. My rear bumper cover has a funny little bend on the pass side. Not super easy to see with the black, and I never worked hard enough with a camera to get a decent pic of it. But I found a GRed FS online that looks exactly the same. Notice the slight upswing on the bottom edge of the bumper cover as it goes left to right, and then the downward hook on the right side behind the tire.

I took a look once and did not see anything obvious, but with nothing known correct with which to compare I figured what the hey and went back to cutting the grass. Any ideas? Might this be bracket related?

Thanks

Joe, I would suspect that you can even things out by removing and straightening the brackets. It took me some time since my were badly bent, but I think I have my rear bumper straight across now. BTW I had a second 968 sitting around so I removed it's brackets as well and had a comparison to help me straighten the bent ones.

Would be nice to have a 2nd 968 sitting around. I'll take lots of pictures of cars that are right at Bob's tomorrow. Thanks Tom.

Joe, from the appearance of the brackets, I would not think that new ones could be very expensive. Of course I have been surprised at Porsche prices at times.

Got under a couple of examples yesterday. Sure enough my right bracket was bent. Smashed it back into shape and it took 80% of the bumper cover bend out. I'll let the plastic relax in its new environment for a while and see if that takes out the remaining 20%. A picture of one that is straight and true (guess which car...)

after looking at the last pic. I'm not sure if my car's bumper bar looks like that?
