Just had 120k service completed on my 92 coupe. I asked my mechanic to take off the valve cover and inspect the cam chain/guides. Everything checked out so I decided not to replace anything. Just thought I would share the pictures with everyone. If anyone sees anything noteworthy here (good or bad) let me know. Cheers.

looks more like a shadow from the head casting.

I am sure that is a shadow. The mechanic rotated the mechanism through one cycle looking for exacly this. They are all fine. I told him explictly what to look for (not that he need me to tell him). I refered him to this document:

Which mechanic did you go to? I went to Scan and asked them to inspect my variocam when I was there last time (a couple of weeks ago), but they didn't take the cover off, just peered through the hole where the variocam stuff connects. Said "everything looked fine" from what they could see, of course things will look fine through a pin hole. I don't understand why mechanics are so reluctant to take the valve cover off? I'm more than willing to pay for it <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/dry.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I went to MCL Porsche in Vancouver. Normally I go to Weissach. I wanted the factory recommeded 120k service performed by the dealer. I spoke with Ray the service rep at MCL. I told them to take the cover off and follow the instructions as per the pdf in the link above. Cost ~220CDN. I made sure they had replacement chain and guides in stock just in case. They did not replace anything as it was deemed unnecessary after the inspection

I was under the impression that there are no factory recommended service schedules of any kind for the variocam - is there a separate maintenance booklet from Porsche or any old notices sent out by dealers

that suggest a variocam inspection / service interval ?

How would one inspect the lower chain guide? I actually have the valve cover off of my car, and while the top guide looks pristine I want to also check out the lower guide. Thanks.

I think the bottom pad gets "inspected" by implication - if the top pad looks good, and the chain looks good, and the cam teeth look good, then the bottom pad also "looks good". The alternative is to replace the pads and chain.

Mechanics are reluctant to pull the cam cover due to the chance of breaking the cover hold down bolts...

Apparently a real PITA if it happens, although my PM seems to think if you "Wake Up" the bolts by tapping on them to set the socket in the heads, they generally come out okay...

I inspected the lower guide by using one of those small mirrors on an antenna like stick and a good light source. There is just enough room to get the mirror in and then bend it 90 degrees.
