My Starter's going...
#1

Hi guys,

I recently took my 1994 Porsche 968 convertible for routine maintenance. One of the things that I’d been complaining about was the starter. Every now and then it would click when I’d start the car, but the car would always start. The battery was also getting old, so after failing a charge test, it was replaced for good measure. However, those clicks are now starting to creep up.

My mechanic mentioned that the starter (part no. 944-604-103-AX) can no longer be sourced in the US. A quick search of all the usual suspects confirms this - the part doesn’t seem to be available in the US. I’m now in a situation where I need to source a new starter, and I suspect I have weeks (not months) to do this. I should also mention that the same starter in the car was rebuilt back in 2018.

Does anyone have any recommendations of the options available to us? Are people using different starters in their 968s when they need to replace them? I’ve been checking eBay for any new old stock, but so far haven’t been successful.

Thank you!

In Europe you can find it. But you will have a massive T tax to pay. Better to do a rebuild. Open it, clean it and check the harnass wiring.
Or ask mister T. At thw white house to pay for it...
Do you have a tip or a manual?

If you can find a source to have it rebuilt, that’s the best option. I understand they’re very easy and relatively inexpensive to rebuild. I could be wrong but brand new ones have not been available in the US for many years , everyting sold has been rebuilt starters .

It's probably too late to avoid the high and increasing cost of getting new parts from Europe and other countries, so try to get it rebuilt locally. Best wishes with finding a solution.

Add to that the fact there weren't that many 968s produced anyway. This means sourcing 968 parts has never been "easy" for those parts unique to the 968. However, some parts are shared with other cars (like the Porsche 944). We've been hoarding 968 parts for years (like new alternator, starter, clutch, pressure plate, LCAs/ball joints, etc). Maybe focus on the maintenance parts?

Just open the starter and take the gear apart, clean it and apply new grease to every parts that need it.

Check the rest for worn parts like carbon brushes etc.

After greasing it should already work pretty good again, and you have seen which parts you need and time to source them now.

the tip starter is fitted to about 1000 different cars,

its easy to rebuild,

the starter 944604103AX is still available as a parts $836.05 direct from Porsche,

If you get the Bosch number off the part and then search for that

$215 for a Bosch starter. Check to see that you get the correct starter for your tiptronic.

I've saw them as low as $85 (off brand remanufactured) and an after market brand new one for $150 (on the Parts Geek site which sometimes is a little off with cross-references, so double check part numbers).

If possible upgrade to a gear reduction or high torque starter. Aircooled guys love the wosp starters.
