lol - rap - yes, "have to". since the public is too stubborn and/or stupid to do it on their own, the government will have to step in. car companies cannot be allowed to continue to build large fleets of gas guzzlers, and the public to buy them, without penalty. since people are too dumb to do anything else, these need to be deemed commercial vehicles, taxed as such, and made undesirable to the masses. this, of course, presumes that we want our children to have air to breath, and not freeze to death. it seems though that the majority don't care about that, and are only focused on their own lives. historically this always leads to the downfall of a society. why every other modern country on the planet has figured this out, and we can't, boggles the mind.



as for the 968, i have also used mine to go to home depot. not the job for which is was intended though. it's a GT. it's supposed to be driven as such. it's not a pickup truck. every time i use it to carry stuff, i regret it.



as for the boxster, i'm still wrestling with that one. i keep coming up against the same reasons i bought the 968, rather than a boxster. i could have done that back then. the 968 is more capable. it's just not new, and i'm having that whole "new car" thing going on right now. i still have a couple of things i'd like to improve on with the 968, and i'm not sure i have the drive to do it. it would be so much easier to just get a new car. a 355GTS keeps popping up in my head too.

Flash, isn't your car practically new? With all the thousands of dollars you put in the car... At least you know what it's weaknesses are, what to keep an eye on. Another second hand car will ask for a whole new shipment of 'drive'.



A new car is always fun for the first month and then you start to realise it's nothing special, unless you buy something a whole lot more rare than a Boxter I guess.

lol - nope - still 20 years old. i may have replaced most of the parts, but the car is still that old, and now has just over 60k miles on it. not a new car by any stretch. yes, it's probably in better shape than just about any other 968 out there, but it's still a 94 968.



it's still a porsche too, which is not a plus in my book. i hate porsches, and almost did not buy this one, just because it is a porsche.



to me, a ferrari, any ferrari, is a better car than any porsche. not sure i want one again, but it does keep bugging me.



i'm just not sure what i want. that's why i need to go and drive the new boxster. i'll need to drive the 355 too. i'm not making any decisions without a lot more homework, and certainly not any lateral decisions. it has to be one that moves me to something better. i'm just not sure what better is yet.

I think flash is correct, Ferrari and Porsche are not equivalent. If I remember correctly it goes something like this:

- Ferrari built production cars so he could go racing.

- Porsche went racing so he could build production cars.

Sync/Flash: That's exactly why no Porsche will ever be inferior to a Ferrari, or to any factory for that matter. They build production cars wich still beat most of the so called 'pure' racecars out there (apart from some track mods off course). If Porsche decides to fabricate a true racer, it mops the floor with anyone, anytime. They want, they take. There are entire libraries filled with books and other media proving just that.



Fact is, Porsche has nothing to prove, and no other manufacturer comes even close in my book. Not on the road, track, or dirt.



This is a biased, maybe narrowminded opinion, but Porsches are for driving, Italians are to keep the dust of your garage floor.



Would you seriously consider buying a car from a manufacturer you hate? I'm trying real hard to get my head around that, brain hurting...

lol - yes - i weighed everything, and even though i hate porsche, and most everything they do, i still bought this car. part of the reason was the even porsche hated the car. i like the fact that porschephiles turn their noses up at it as not a real porsche. that works for me. if they made another convertible front engined, rear drive car, i might consider it, but again i would have to weigh in the detrimental factor of it being a porsche, and all of the over-engineered, over-complicated, over-priced things that come with that. if for no other reason than i had to double my wine budget, i would think more than twice before buying another porsche.



as for porsche always winning, they get beaten a lot. they win a lot too. i wouldn't go so far though as to say they mop the floor, unless you are talking about having to clean up the messes from all the blown motors. he he he



all that being said, it's hard to argue with the bang for the buck you get with the boxster. it has always been that way. relatively speaking, they are a very inexpensive car. i can't think of another one that does what it does, for that kind of money.

I recommended a Cobra to him awhile back, and as I recall, his objection was the lack of a top.



I'm sure you (Flash) have thought of it, but what about a Z8? They're beautiful, but imperfect (overweight, not very good handling, and their dash layout leaves A LOT to be desired), but that would potentially give you the room to tinker that you enjoy so much.



But I hear you about not driving very much - I'm the same way. We're very close to getting a new car for my wife (99% settled on a Subaru Forester turbo), so I'm salivating over the prospect of inheriting my older daughter's nearly-worthless 2004 BMW 325i, with its glorious automatic transmission, so I can stop grinding my 968's clutch to oblivion on the insanely conjested trip to and from the vanpool pick-up point. I'm sure I'll be racking up, oh, I don't know, maybe all of 2000 miles a year on the BMW.

Nope. I share driving to the vanpool pick-up point with a co-worker who lives up the street, and at about 6'2", 220 or so lb, I don't think riding on the back of a bike would work too well for him. And Austin is a terrible place to have a bike in general - everything is just too spread out - pretty stereotypical urban sprawl. Not getting the "pollute the air" comment, though. Despite being an avowed non-tree-hugger, I bet I have a smaller carbon footprint than 95% of the population.



But like Flash, I have very little need for a car - the most driving I do is to and from the track. However, I do need one just enough that I can't do completely without one.

Yeah, the Z8's interior is pretty hideous. Amazing how BMW took a stunningly gorgeous car and ruined it. But while it may be a daunting task, I wonder if it could be fixed.
