My Mid-Life Crisis 968 Cabriolet
#1

Well, after several months of lurking around 968forums.com, researching 968s, and second-guessing myself about the wisdom of buying a sports car while only a few years away from retirement, I finally did it: I bought a triple-black, 1994 Cabriolet last week.

The car has 91k miles, and is very good condition overall. And, boy, is it ever a strong runner! It's a "718" car, having been manufactured in May 1993, but sold and titled as a 1994 model.

Not many options of note, except the 220 LSD. The clutch and pinion bearing were replaced 2k miles ago by the previous owner. The interior is nearly perfect -- no tears in the seats, no dash cracks, excellent carpet. Ditto the canvas and headlining of the soft top. A few minor dings in the paintwork (primarily a few re-touched stone chips on the hood). The timing belt is nearing replacement mileage, so it's off to the shop soon for that work (and for a VarioCam inspection).

There are no fluid leaks of any kind, the oil pressure is excellent (2.5 bar at hot idle; 4.5 at speed), and the coolant temp runs just below the first white mark when cruising. Everything works, too, except for the top, which is in manual mode. The PO acquired the car that way, and doesn't know the history of the top problem. But...the main bow is fine and the top fits snugly and operates smoothly by hand.

The PO had just put new 17" rims and Michelin Z-rated tires on the car, and included the nearly perfect original 16" rims (with Yoko tires mounted) with the sale. New battery too. Also included was the orignal DME chip (he'd installed a performance chip).

Sorry for the long post, but I had to share my find with the forum. Thanks to the expert knowledge on this board, I was a well-prepared, educated consumer when I began my quest for a 968.

If there are any 968 owners in the Washington DC/Baltimore/Annapolis area who would like to get together sometime and compare notes about these wonderful cars, send me a PM.

I would be up for a meet. I am on the north side of baltimore. I would not mind driving down to DC. Perhaps we could do it before the weather turns cold?

Welcome to the 968 community and congratulations on you new "toy". You should hook up with Cosimo, he knows some neat roads around there! Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

No need to apologize for long post, as long as they’re well written, I enjoy them.

I’m in MD but just 15min from DC. My car is still in the shop but should I have it back in time count me in.

Welcome to the fam.

Curious. What made you choose the 968 as your sport car of choice?

I love my 968 for what it is & don't hate it for what it isn't!

I'm in the DC area too, and would be willing to get together on a Sunday morning for breakfast and a fun run somewhere. In another 7-8 weeks, the car goes in the garage for the duration, though.

If someone wants to organize something on a Saturday or Sunday morning, announce it here and see how many can participate. Be careful about Cosimo, though... he's liable to drive down the road with his hatch up!

I am not in the DC area, but it is my hometown and only three to four hours away. If y'all decide to get together, and my schedule permits I'llake the ride up. Keep me posted.

Welcome! We all seem to love the long posts, especially the well-written ones like yours...

I'd be interested in hearing the differenece between the two sets of tires/wheels you have.

If you ever get bored, change the wheels over to the 16" w/toyo's and take her for a long drive. I'd love to know what you think of the difference between the two. Things like, ride - harder/softer, noise level, cornering grip on dry, cornering grip on wet. And the generall feeling of the difference of the 16" to 17" feel.

I have 17" Michelin Sport Cups on mine and I think they are LOUD and don't grip very well. But then again, I expect a lot from my tires!

Again welcome to the 968 world!

Thanks for the welcome! I'm in southern Calvert County, near Solomons. There are some nice restaurants down here where a group of us could meet for lunch, and there are some interesting back roads for exploration, just off MD Rt. 4 between Solomons and Prince Frederick.

How about trying for a lunch meeting at Stoney's Restaurant (which is located on the harbor in Solomons, and has GREAT crabcakes) on Sunday, October 22, at around noon? 'Course, Solomons is a long drive for many, so I'm completely open to meeting nearer to DC or Baltimore. Suggestions as to a different venue/date are welcome! (BTW, Sundays are best for me.)

Directions to Stoney's:

Take the Capital Beltway (I-495) to Rt. 4 South (Pennsylvania Ave.) Rt. 4 eventully becomes Rt 2/4. Not to worry, no turns. Just keep driving until you think you're going to fall off the end of the earth (actually, about 56 miles from the Beltway). Take the exit for Solomon's Island, and make a right on Solomon's Island Road. Stoney's is about 3/4 mile, on the left. There's plenty of free public parking opposite the restaurant, next to the boardwalk. Be careful of your speed on Rt 4. It's a 4-lane divided highway all the way to Solomons from the Beltway, and the Maryland State Police and county troopers are always hanging around with their radar (ask me how I know). Stoney's phone: 410-394-0236.

Rhudeboye and Ether Joe: About why I chose the 968... I admire Porsche's ability to achieve such high performance out of a 4-cylinder engine -- doing more with less. Handling: Even by today's standards, this 12-year-old car is pretty impressive, I think. Then there's the downright attractiveness of the 968: it's just a really sexy-looking car! And, IMO, the Cab is surely one of the nicest looking convertibles ever made. Plus, since so few 968s were manufactured, there's an exclusivity factor attached to ownership.

Thanks again to all for the replies and welcomes. Really great forum!

I'll post some pics of the car soon.

yeah. . . consider though it's a 3.0L 4 cyl and very similar performance to the 3-liter BMW M3 straight 6 of the time (was the M3 3.2 back then?) . . . thing I like is that it's 240hp out of 3L and NO forced induction. . . not bad for 14 years ago <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

and you're right. . . the car is still IMO one of the best looking ones out there. . . today's cars are SO over-styled. . . BMW, Lexus, even the Cayman (loooooove the 997 though)

Gosh, you want me to have to get up real early. Actually for me it is about the same as DC, I used to work at Pax many years ago so I know the area. I will be there schedule permitting as well.

Thanks, Mark. I notice you're from Damascus. I grew up there...graduated from DHS, Class of, um...1968. Was a combined junior/senior high school in those days. Grades 7-12 in one building.
