Thanks Charles. It was a great weekend. Too bad you weren't able to be there. I managed to win GTS2 both days despite some heavy pressure from a very well driven 944 S2. I'll probably post some video in the next few days. There were two other 968's in attendence. Mike Ward drove his 968 to 3rd place in GTS2 in both races. Also, Rich Glickel was there running Mid Ohio for the first time in his 968. He raced in the 944 Super Cup class and finished second both days.

Here's a video of the first three laps of the race on Sunday. At the start I'm the first car in GTS2 with 8 other GTS2 cars behind me. All of the cars in front of me are in the faster GTS classes. All goes well until my car gets loose in turn 13 allowing a GTS2 944 S2 to get in front of me. We then trade positions a few times before I retake the GTS2 lead for good in the Keyhole.

Yup. My current Mid Ohio setup is very loose, and cold tires make it even more loose.

Jim,
Why do you set up your car to oversteer so much at Mid-Ohio? It looks like you really have your hands full getting into the complex prior to the carosel under braking. Obviously it works. I'm just trying to learn.
I really liked the way your car looked through the keyhole. Is your set-up designed to take advantage of the long straight there?
Thanks,
Joel

Mid Ohio has several corners where an understeering car will really slow you down. The Keyhole, Turn 9, Turn 11 and the Carousel are all good examples. All of these corners precede flat out sections, and are therefore critical for a good lap time. It takes a very loose setup overall to minimize/eliminate understeer in these corners. You want the front end to bite as soon as possible so you can get to WOT as early as possible. Cold tires are an a bit of an issue since you set the cold pressures low enough that the hot pressures will be in the sweet spot midway through the race. With a loose setup that can make the first lap or two interesting.

Got it. Makes sense to me.
You just have to be on your game on cold tires...
Thanks again,

Nice job Jim...did you eventually put some distance between you and the S2 or did you have hold him off the whole race? That could have been very stressful and yet very exhillirating at the same time. Thanks for the video.

He was glued to my rear bumper through the first half of the race. You're right, it was extremely exciting. I then started to pull away from him, building up around a 4 second lead. However, with about 4 laps to go I started getting a little bit of fuel starvation, and was forced to slow down a bit. This allowed him to close back up, and he ended up finishing 1.3 seconds back. I was very happy to see the checker!!
This looks like it was the faster group right infront of you, they even mention your win in the description

The quality is pretty poor (thanks to google), but I think they passed you right after turn 1 at around 9:45 or so. Could this be the first chase cam footage of Jim's 968?
Yes, this video is shot from Sacha Clark's winning GTS3 Porsche 993 and shows his battle for the GTS3 lead with the red BMW M3. These guys started in front of me along with a few other higher class cars. You don't see me at all in this video, as they never lapped me. The car you see at 9:45 is a 944 cup car. There is chase cam footage of my battle for the GTS2 lead with the 944 S2 shot from Mike Ward's 968. I could post that if people are interested.
If you want to see some more good video, follow the link above and click on "from user". You can see Sacha's video from the previous day showing another battle with the red BMW M3 of Scott Berkowitz. Scott's car was incredibly loose in the early laps, yet he still managed to hang on to it.
BTW, any chance we can get a non google video version? Their quality is horrible
Agreed, but I don't have anyplace where I can host 100+ meg videos. If someone wants to host them I could upload the high quality versions.
