The Beltronics RX65 Suction Cup Mount Sucks

I have the aforementioned Beltronics RX65 radar detector, with the standard-supplied suction cup mount affixing it to my windshield.

Aside from the odd spontaneous detachment (especially when using my windshield heat shield), it seems to hold on OK.



The trouble is, whenever I hit a good bump in the road, the radar detector will "slap" or "clatter" against the windshield because the suction cups are so flimsy and the radar detector is just hard plastic with no "bumpers" on it.



I've mounted a couple of little cupboard door stops on the top of the detector to try to keep it from making such a racket, but they aren't going to stay in place very long, especially as hot as it gets on the windshield.



Has anyone tried the "super-de-duper" suction cup mount that Beltronics provides? Is it any better?

odd - i didn't have that problem in any of the cars. i made sure that i have set the angle right, pushing the slide in until it makes firm contact with the windshield. i also cleaned and then wet the suction cups before applying them.



in the SL550, which still uses the suction cups, it occasionally falls down, but only after sitting in the sun for a long time. it never rattles or falls on a bump though



in both the 968 and the denali, i now have the mirror mount for the homelink mirror. i have not tried the one you show, but i have that style for the garmin, and it holds "ok"

Thanks for the comments. The "super-de-duper" one looks like a behemoth, but if it holds the detector off the glass, all the better. I've tried all angles, but there's really only one setting that holds the detector level, each of the other settings just makes the suction cups droop or pushes them up too far.

hmmm - where are you trying to mount the detector? it should not be exactly level, but rather pointed slightly downward and slightly to the right, basically aiming at a point off the side of the road about 1000 feet in front of you. you have to choose between the prioritization of laser or radar. mount high for radar, and low for laser.



the problem i think you will have with the big mount is that the detector will be too far away from the windshield, thereby increasing the mechanical advantage of the "lever"

The only way to tilt the detector left or right is to put one suction cup slightly above or below the other, but mine is mounted in a straight-ahead fashion. Vertically, I have the detector biased for "laser" by having it low on the windshield, just above the wiper blades. Today it "gently reminded" me of my speed just before I crested a rise and saw a sheriff sitting on the left side of the road, as they often do here, so angling the detector to the right is not really the best option (at least in NY).

I have both types of the above mounts - the dual suction cups are in my 968, and the "super-de-duper" mount is in the HIghlander. Use them with Escort Solos. Both work well, but the "super-de-duper" one is more adjustable. It also seems to be quite a bit more solid.



As for angling the detector, I suspect it doesn't make much of a difference, at least not with the Solo or any other detector that has 360 degree coverage.

angling helps with pop radar and laser. it won't really help with traditional radar

As predicted, the rubber bumpers came loose in the hot sun, and they made it kind of "bouncy" anyway, which was distracting.



So this afternoon I shaved off the two little nubs on the back shoulder of the detector, then contact-cemented two little squares of the "fluffy" side of velcro to the same spot, being careful not to cover the red plastic part that covers the actual detector bits.



It was great on the way home, even going over the railroad tracks. The detector was still firmly positioned without "bounce", and it made no noise.

alternatively you could use one of those felt pieces you put under things to let them slide and not scratch things. a pair of scissors and you can cut them to just the shape you want.

Most of those I've seen are 1/8" to 1/4" thick. Anything that thick leads to off-center leverage between the windshield and the shoulder of the detector, which combined with heat leads to slippage, a la the little rubber nubs I used earlier. The fluffy side of velcro is thin and actually gets pressed harder against the body of the detector while in use.

How is that mirror mount working? My mirror is shot - hit it with of all things some blow back from a spray on sunscreen and it etched the mirror surface - useable but very annoying. The mount is not specific to a particular mirror right?



I'd worry about the extra weight on the mirror button.

Mine is hard wired and mounted above the mirror. It's a very neat application. It is a Valentine One. My only problem is trying to take it off quickly if I get pulled over (illegal here in VA). The last time I got a ticket, I tried to get it down before the cop came to the car and couldn't get it completely off. It was kind of dangling but the cop ignored it or didn't see it. The cop let me off me off with a lesser offense. He saw my track map decals and asked if I tracked the car. I said yes.
