Southern Cal Fires
#1

Hoping all our friends ( and their houses, and their 968s ) in the greater Sta Barbara area are ok and safe !

( I sent "SBdriving" a PM, but I'm guessing far greater priorities are at play, than logging on the forum )

Anyway, all the best wishes !!

Dan:

Thanks for the kind words. I live just outside the evacuation area. I dealt with this already in the summer with the Gap Fire from the west and now we're being threatened from the east. One of my best friends lost his home that he just finished a two year renovation on. Fortunately, there have been no fatalities yet. It seems as though the fire season is longer than when I was younger and much more severe with each passing year.

Jarrod, glad to hear ( though I am surprised you have the time to log on here <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/ohmy.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> )

My friend's house, whilst safe for now has been evacuated and they're living with friends.. as you said, lucky there have not been any fatalities, but what h*ll ! I saw both film and photos of the destruction and though not an uncommon event in our State , one just never gets used to it.. Sure, this may pale by comparison to New Orleans' devastation, so not losing perspective, but even at 300 miles away it strikes a scarier note in my book - I fear fire more than water, I suppose..

Jarrod, and anyone else,

Make sure to leave if you feel threatened The "Guejito" fire blew through our yard 13 months ago, our next door neighbor lost their house, ours by some incredible circumstances didn't burn, but we lost lots of landscaping, fences, etc. We waited until the last minute before we left, but with hindsight I am not sure that was a good idea. The smoke go so thick we couldn't see or breath right anymore (and subsequently couldn't think straight). The only way to stay is if you have proper breathing equipment and fireproof clothing. We had about 6 hours of watching and waiting with 4 cars packed full of stuff. One of the wooden patio cover posts even burned, but it didn't spread to the house. Even though the house was still here, the whole experience was really traumatic.

I'll be thinking of you.

I lived in SB back during the Hope Ranch fire, [many moons ago] and had to evacuate. I stayed behind and watered everything down and put out several embers. It's a surreal scary feeling when you have to decide what to take and what to leave. I moved out and back in over a 24hr period.

I now live down the coast in Ventura Co.; and even with a reduced chance of fire I keep important docs in a fireproof safe...

I did not know you saw the flames from Witch Creek last year Roland. Yikes. I just got your soot. Hopefully the cooler temps helped you out Jarrod. Looks like maybe we'll see a break in the heat and wind. Saturday felt like a blow torch out there.
