not without knowing where the problem is - how does the shifter feel? is the clutch still working? this is a manual box, right?

Clutch is working. I drove it home in third. The shifter is very movable and does not seem like it is connected at all. Another question is, would you drive to drive it to the shop in third, or have it towed? I made it home Okay, but I don't want to burn up my clutch.

when you grab the knob, can you pull upward on it and it moves a lot?

It won't pull upward. It is loose in the front area, but you can't move it to to rear at all.

it sounds like one of two things:

1. the bushing at the base of the shifter has shattered (common) and is a cheap and easy fix

2. a disconnect has happened in the rear - this could be a couple of things

if you have a short shift kit, the set screw may have backed out

the set screw on the armature in oem layout may have backed out

the armature may have broken

one of the linkages may have become disconnected or broken

in any event, i don't think it will be expensive or difficult

you can verify the front bushing very easily by removing the cover plate and lifting out the shifter

the rest will require getting under the car

Thanks Bob! Would you try to drive it to the shop in third? About 10 miles with 4 or 5 stop signs and lights.
