Light weight sunroof

I've looked at all the usual suspects (searched this forum, rennlist, etc.) for detailed information on a light weight sunroof solution for a car with a power sunroof and can't find anything. I've been trying my best to keep the interior of my car in one piece, only removing easily replaceable items. The sunroof on these cars is very heavy especially since it's fiberglass. Track rules require a roof panel so you can't run without it. I'd love to find a solution that I could put on the car specifically for track days without a bunch of other mods, in other words one that would mount using the power lifting arms.

The early non-power panels are really light, especially if you take the interior off of them. Could one of them be made to mount to the power lifting arms?



Any suggestions?



I probably need to bite the bullet and install a roll cage which would allow me to mount the panel to the roll hoop. I just haven't wanted to add the 80 lbs. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/sad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Have you tried GT Racing?

They have one listed at 1 1/2lbs. Only $195 for Fiberglass and $295 for Carbon Fiber

Thanks for the link.



I knew they had a replacement panel, but I don't know anyone who has ever adapted it to work with the power lifting arms. Making something work with the power lifting arms is really my quandary.

It's a slippery slope, indeed.....



I have a couple of suggestions:

* Isn't the Saratoga glass sunroof lighter? I've never weighed mine, but it feels lighter than the factory roof.

* A manual sunroof conversion is common among the 944 crowd. I'm not sure of the exact process (you can search over on Rennlist), but I believe it involves ripping out the interior parts of the sunroof, the sunroof motor, and using manual sunroof latches (commonly found on eBay).

Personally, I'd be nervous with a peice of glass over my head, what with the possibilities and all.



GT racing is a good solution...I've bought plenty of stuff from Hank.

Does anybody know if the GT racing sunroof bolt in or does it install like the OEM roof or some other method?

The only GT racing sunroof that I have seen required installation as needed by the user. In other words, it's a figerlass panel, mount it however you want. I have not spoken to GT Racing directly. They may have additional details available on mounting options.

Hi Guys,



I looked at the GT racing one and they said they no longer did carbon hence my fabrication project.



This is still not yet off the ground because my carbon guy is real busy but I think it has potential



Bottom line for me is that my old roof doesn't fit so I now need something to cover the hole

I spoke to Hank at GT racing.



He said that he sells a new "skin".



You take your old sunroof assembly, remove the steel skin from this assembly and install the fiberglass/CF skin in its place. Then install the sunroof assembly back into the car. Reduces roof weight by ~20 lbs.



Now if (like Graham), you can't use your sunroof because of a cage or some other such reason, the GT racing product probably won't work out of the box.

I have the GT racing sunroof panel on my race car. Mine is simply glued in place and filled so it appears not to have a sunroof on the outside.



I don't see anyway the GT panel will work in any sort of stock scenario (tilt/removeable). It is just a thin skin that is the same outside dimensions as the stock sunroof. How to attach it is up to you. The stock panel doesn't have a frame or any seperate pieces that be can easily adapted to the GT panel. The stock sunroof is a thick composite (I hesitate to just call it fiberglass) with inserts molded/glued into it so that the latches, etc can be attached to it.
