I doubt the sc would have made much of a difference, it would have only closed the gap a little bit more but that's all..
And don't get me wrong, I think adding some 60-whatever ft/lbs of torque at a much wider rpm band range to this
car will be an absolute blast, but thinking you'll be able to go out there and run against all these new sport or "sport sedans", which seem to keep coming out with more and more power and that at 9/1 or so weight-power ratios, might lead to a lot of dissapointment [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dry.gif[/img]

You'd need to be in the neighborhood of 350hp/320tq to have a similar weight:hp ratio of 9:1.

But, you'd still be at a significant disadvantage in a drag race- you can't shift anywhere near as fast as the Lexus transmission (~100 milliseconds per shift). Even with eight gears, that sucker will row through 'em faster than you can say sh...

So, all else being equal, it should still pull away.

Now, if you can trim the 968's weight down to under 3000, say 2900, then you only need about 320hp to get 9:1. Then you can start making up for that slow Porsche shifter/driver!!

LOL- I didn't mean that as serious as everyone took it. Even though the SC will add some HP, I realize where the car is in the grand scheme of things.

That being said, falling just a little behind on a 2008+ sports car w over 400HP and twice the cylinders of our 68 is nothing to be a shame of. Gotta give a nod of respect considering the specs of each car.

So how far did you fall behind. Gotta think once the IS got rolling it started pulling bus lengths on you.

Worse than the M5 I foolishly took on once [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif[/img] . And IIRC, about par with the Audi RS4 which humored me in a similar encounter a couple of months ago. I do this stuff not because I'm delusional enough to think I might have a chance against these vehicles, but rather just to get an up-close and in person sense of how big the acceleration deltas are between various cars .. From my experience paper stats ( the mfg stats, or those from tests by various magazines, etc..) are more than often off mark..and sometimes way off mark. I guess there are so many variables that come into play from one day to the next, one driver to the next and one car to the next that I'm often amused at the actual outcome of some of these challenges.. both good and bad.
To answer the question, the ISF left the parking lot of the grocery store which exists into a four lane frontage road leading to a highway onramp ( about 1/4 mi away ) and she turned onto that road spinning her tires, so I knew this lady was on it ! I was about a car length behind her, just shifting into second and immediately took after her to see if I can get on that onramp ahead of the Lexus ( hey, I've never seen nor heard of an ISF before, and figured it's a Lexus for crying out loud, how fast can it be ?! [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dry.gif[/img] ). Well, by the time we got to the onramp she was easily 150+ ft ahead still getting further.. I think my speedometer was right around 100.
A brand new head, mods helping it to around 260+ hp, 50-70 lbs lighter than stock, no AC on ( which is almost unheard of in my case ) , only half tank of gas, and still felt soooo slow driving behind that damn "luxury" car.

Must be the 12 lbs worth of spacers on my wheels.. yeah, that's the ticket ! , otherwise I would have dusted her car [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif[/img]

My most humbling experience was a viper. This guy that gets his hair cut at the same barber shop as me was coasting along at about 40 when I decided to run up on his bumper. Much like Dan, I didnt think I could take him but I'm moving about 60 and closing in fast. Well he let me get about 2 car lengths behind and then he floored it OMG! You would think I hit the brakes.

Yeah, it's pretty remarkable to see and experience the mind-numbing acceleration Vipers, ZR1s, Ferrari F430 or 599 have, as opposed to a few of the other cars out there which may just pull away from the 968 by a bus length here and there but not with a pronounced enough difference that would make you feel like you're driving a slug. We all know this is not a 0-60 car, it never was, but once it gets rolling the 968 is by no means slow..even by today's new car standards. I've had the same same "feels like I hit the brakes" experience coming up really fast on a Ferrari F430 to get a closer look at it, he might have been going 70, I was
probably at 90+ , when he saw me and stepped on it I wondered if I just shifted in reverse by mistake and started going backwards [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif[/img] . So you're humbled by those kind of cars, but then you race a three or four years old Carrera 4 ( not the S )
and stay neck in neck with it and can't help but think : this is pretty friggin' great .

Jamie, I'd let the car warm up and make sure the vario connection is plugged in, an S 4 should not outrun your car...again, once you get going.. off the line is another story.

Dan,

The 2007 S4 has slightly better power to weight ratio (340 HP and 3659 lbs) and published 0-60 around 0.5 seconds better than the 968 (depending on where you look).
He jumped ahead off the line with the AWD, but I was proud of my old car for keeping it pretty close.

so many cars now are putting V8s with crazy power into them - the numbers look great, and the cars are amazing

that being said, i still find that i prefer driving the 968 - there is something far too esoteric to describe about the way the car drives - it's a feeling of confidence that cannot be put into words that exceeds the mere performance numbers

but i wouldn't go picking on these newer cars in stoplight races - it'll only lead to a quick visit to your favorite pub

I couldn't agree more. Even if the cost was the same, I'd still take the 968 any day, any time in terms of driving experience over countless cars out there that can blow its doors off ( as in.. new supercharged Jaguars, Cadillacs, Lexus F, Nissan GTRs, M3s, etc, etc.. ). Of course, give me an Audi R8, a DB 9 ( heck, even a DB7 ), most 2000 and later Ferraris or Maseratis, and the 968 will be gathering a lot of dust parked in the garage. Have you driven the new vette? The Z06 handles surprisingly well, even in the corners. They are far too common as i see 6 every time I drive around the corner and I don't like the intr as it is too cheap for the breed of car. But it is a nice car with tremendous power. Now if I could get that engine in my 68 w no issues at a reasonable cost, I would have the ideal car... Bring on that IS-F

I've driven a friend's Vette but it's not a brand new one..it's about three or four years old IIRC, and even that one handled as if it had a 50/50 weight distribution . The power is amazing, steering response and stability remarkable, and whilst more restrictive seating / cabin space or ergonomics-wise than the 968, it's a pretty nice car...but two things which bug the hell out of me and why I would never buy a Vette : 1) piece of crap costruction ; at the time I drove it it was less than six months off the dealer lot and it felt like it had 200,000 miles on it - shaky, everything rattled, sounded as it it was going to fall apart. 2) stigma - as Flash put it, can't find belt buckles big enough to go with the car [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif[/img]
