Le Mans blog
#1

Dan Neil is the Pulitzer-winning automobile columnist at the LA Times (and an NC State alumni - Go Pack!). If you don't read his weekly "Rumble Seat" column you are really missing some good writing. He is experienced, insightful, and at time downright hilarious. For example, his review this week of the new Jeep Wrangler Rubicon centered around James Fenimore Cooper.

You may recall a year or so ago when his negative review of the Pontiac G6 caused GM to threaten pulling all of their advertising from the paper! He can be merciless.

He is blogging from Le Mans this year and the first entry, primarily about the Audi R10 effort, is fascinating. If you are interested in motorsports and Le Mans this blog may be the next best thing to being there.

( Sorry, I didn't go to Le Mans, maybe next year )

A new victory for Porsche in Le Mans <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Victory of Raymond Narac ( France ), Richard Lietz (Austria) and Patrick Long (USA) in GT2 class, in a 911 GT3 RSR from the team IMSA Performance. This is the first attempt from a GT3 " type 997" in Le Mans, and it had to compete with a bunch of Ferrari F430, Panoz, Corvette, Saleen, etc...

Under bad weather conditions, the Porsche are terribly efficient.

Yes the weather was worse. But the atmosphere was good and the ambiance too.

I've never seen so many Porsches lamborghi and aston martins, ferrari etc on the campingside.

Fantastic event.

But I've only seen 924, 928 and 944 there were no 968 on the parkingplaces!.

Next year I will go again!.

The Spyders were parked in the United States waiting for the next ALMS race (Limerock in early July). Porsche did not compete at Le Mans in LMP2. Unfortunate as only two LMP2 cars even finished the race. If the Porsches could have lasted they probably would have won that category.

Rumor is they will go to Le Mans next year. Seems like they don't want to go unless they know they can win. But the ALMS LMP2 Acura team is doing well and giving them fits so far this year.

A 997 GT RS did win the GT2 category against some very tough Ferrari F430 competition.

I am sure the ACO will change the rules for Le Mans soon, but as they stand at the moment the rules favour the diesal cars and LMP2 cars could not win outright in a straight fight. I think Peugeot will win next year and then the rules will be changed.

There were quite a few 968's around I think I counted 5 or 6, but most of sunday was spent shetering.

I spotted 968's all over the place, I know one was camping at Houx, I saw a club sport

on the car park alongside the airport and I saw several in traffic around the circuit,
