Kumho ECSTA MX, anyone use/used them?
#1

I'm thinking of putting a set of Kumho ECSTA MX's on my stock 93 968 coupe. Tire sizes are:

225/45zr17 front

255/40zr17 rear

They seem to be an awesome tire - i was looking at either these or the Goodyear F1 GS-D3's.

Comments? Suggestions?

I put the Goodyears on my car last spring - VERY pleased. Wet traction is amazing. I think you had another thread where you were concerned about noise. I don't find these to be noisy, but that doesn't mean they won't be on the particular pavement you have. The noise level does vary noticeably with road surface (concrete vs. asphalt).

Not sure about the MX, but previous generations of Kumho (Ecsta, etc.) wore really quickly. They got noisy even faster. If a Goodyear, Michelin, or Bridgestone is in your price range they are well worth it. You will most likely make the dollar difference back in better performance and additional miles.

I am very happy with my Bridgestone RE750s - and they were a deal.

I have a set of MXs on my 968

I really like them.

Good grip in the dry, but the large tread blocks makes for fun wet driving.

there are probably worse tires in the rain but probably better one's as well.

Hi

Don`t even think about the Kumho ! They`re crap !! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/mad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> Nice grip on dry worn tarmac, but if you

get 2 raindrops, they`re slipping away. Fun but not safe, and the grip on wet is catastrophic... STAY AWAY <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/ohmy.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

About two hours ago I made the plunge and ordered the Goodyear Eagle F1's...

I'm confident I made the right decision <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Thanks for all the inputs!

Congrats on your decision; you DEFINITELY made the right choice. This input is obviously after-the-fact, but for anyone else considering Kumho's vs anything else, I second stian968's response. I had Ecsta's on my car when I got it, and the were HORRIBLE. My car had a case of snap throttle oversteer that could only be described as demonic. The slightest application of throttle before the wheels were pointed perfectly straight, and I would have sworn I had activated a release valve for a hidden vat of oil situated near my rear wheels. And they were just as bad in the dry as in the wet. I replaced them with Goodyear Eagle GS-D3's, and it doesn't even feel like I'm driving the same car. They are phenomenal; I'm sure you'll be very happy with them.

I guess I am on the other side once again. I put the Kumho's on my 05 Cayenne after the factory Continentals wore out at 17,000 miles. They are a great tire, wwith great handling in wet/dry and snow and they are still going strong after 26,000 miles.

Another who got caught out with the Kumhos. My fault as I was used to my Toyo R888's R-spec, but I went around a corner put a bit of power on and 'Whooshhhkkkaaa' instantly sideways, opp lock correct, whoah now on the otherside, opp lock re-correct etc, etc...this on dry new tarmac. They are going in the bin once I get my car back!

remember that a tire is only as good as the guy driving and the amount you push the car - if you don't drive hard, nearly any tire will be fine, though some will be noisier than others - the generals i have on the denali are great for that car, but i wouldn't put them on the 968 - same goes for the RE750s i have on the bmw - this is purely because i drive the car hard - if i were commuting instead, the 750s would be a good choice - on the 968 i want the softest gummiest tire i can get that is street legal - i don't care how long they last - on the bmw, i want a good performer that will last 25k - on the denali, i want a good wet tire that will take a high weight load and be quiet

so, the big question is "how will you be driving the car and what are you looking for in a tire?"
